But in that context, time doesn't need to have a beginning as it was a human construct.

I believe time to be independent of humans. What we call time is just a series of events. But the point is, that if there was no time there could be no events. Time beginning would be an event, and so couldn't occur without time.

Scientific notation is really simple. It's literally just a × 10^b. E-notation is just changing that into aE^b (sometimes for the benefit of calculator displays, which is why the b will occasionally not be a superscript), it's still the same formula.
