From a brief googling (turns out the character beats out the actual ship) the Shimakaze was an experimental super-destroyer that didn't really do anything and then got sunk.
Lets be honest with ourselves.

Is it any creepier than her licking eyeballs?
Yes I think so.

Charles Barkley's Shut Up and Jam: Gaiden.

This game.

To change the subject, watching a man eat a cactus is oddly cathartic.

I don't understand Touhou. How does a twitchy bullet hell shooter with a bunch of little girls for characters get the sort of pervasive fandom it does? Pedos?

Mostly fanart and doujins. It's a self perpetuating fandom. Like most "fans" don't even know of the original game.

Also ship girl avatar.

I think my conception of cactus eating isn't quite as painful as yours.

I don't understand these things at all, and thus I've learned not to judge them. Just fear them.

I've never been into Tohou, since the gameplay makes me spontaneously start crying at the mere thought of its conception, but I was into TF2 back in the day, and both have dedicated bases for similar reasons: Funny snippets and memes, redonkulous challenge of bullet hell that some people love, single-gender populations for easy shipping and cuteness for people into that sorta' thang', but above all, deep, well-written characterization in two genres (Shoot Em' Ups/FPSs respectively) that normally forsake plot or development for the sake of pure gameplay.

Touhou caught my interest since I've been playing arcade shooters and such since the Commodore-64 days. It's one thing dodging planes and bullets over the pacific in 1942, it's another thing being in relatively the same place dodging a crapload more bullets, and in pretty patterns, in these games. Then again, I like the occasional arcade challenge. I grew up on it. The game got my interest since I spotted it on tropes where difficult, but fun extra bosses were concerned. Flandre Scarlet looked like a fun fight.
