Well, I found my first post outside the DF boards, it's in the Space Station 13 thread.

No e-peening here.  It's just kind of interesting... Never really thought of myself as one of the old guard.  But I'm realizing that several of the people that I've always thought of as old guard (much more so than me) don't really predate me by that much.  Or even joined after me.  But I think a lot of it has to do with how some people are just way more active and/or personally engaged than I am.  I generally lurk about and post/comment at random.  Say random stuff about myself and learn about others, but keep things at arms distance at the same time.  In 4 years, I've hardly interacted with anyone here outside of the forum.  It sucks that my activity has had to drop way off over the last several months, too.

I was lurking in 2012 though, but I can't remember when that started. I remember getting into DF because I was looking in the Something Awful Let's Play archives, and I saw a wonderful little fortress called Boatmurdered. Eventually I started lurking on the forums to read succession games, and then I found the lower boards and everyone there seemed friendly enough, and shortly thereafter I made an account. It's almost been a year, and what a great year it's been. (Not really though, my life is still pretty bad)

Date registered means nothing, really. I didn't really start posting until 2009-ish.

This right here. One of the things that first turned me on to B12 was the fact that there were no bullshit, clannish seniority-meters below our usernames. Granted, people still find ways to get into the same sort of behavior, but even having it hidden in our profiles is a far sight ahead of a lot of places. All postcount means is that you're saying a lot, there's no automatic measure of your signal-to-noise ratio.

In regards to what Janet said a few pages back... it's a judgement on the quality of the rest of the 'net more than on here/us; we've got a double handful of problems, but periodic bouts of arrogance, cliquishness, and somewhat obscured stupidity sort of pale in comparison to the semicoherent bigotry, rank stupidity, biased moderation, &tc. that defines a lot of communities. Sort of like saying that, "Hey, living in a post-industrial state is sort of shitty because you're probably being spied on, are having your rights stripped away behind closed doors, &tc., but at least you aren't dying of malaria, unable to gain access to clean water, or watching your family be executed because of misfortune of birth."
