Well, that's the point. Only someone with the fortitude to survive being cut open and having a bunch of extra organs stuffed in, then not stitched up afterwards, has the qualifications to be a Space Marine.

And even then, only the better amongst them. Lots of people survive the process but don't take well enough to Astartes physiology to be accepted.

Well, that's the point. Only someone with the fortitude to survive being cut open and having a bunch of extra organs stuffed in, then not stitched up afterwards, has the qualifications to be a Space Marine.

Don't they have their entire rib cage replaced with a solid plate, too?

One of the implants causes the rib cage to fuse into a single mass. I don't think they do bend. Astartes violate square-cube pretty drastically (as everybody who makes a serious attempt at cosplaying as them finds out, the proportions are just wrong for a normal human).

I tried to think whether this is actually any faster, or if it just looks cool, but now it makes sense! They are physically incapable of rotating their upper body enough to pick themselves up in a normal fashion! That's hilarious!

I'd imagine they'd have a built in iron lung-like system, mostly designed to help all those captains who insist on not wearing helmets on low oxygen planets.

I really wouldn't be surprised if it turned out Space Marines had gills. They seem to have an answer to everything else.
