Steam got an interface update. Nothing big, but the news headers and 'time played' text will change colour between red or blue depending on the dominant colour in the gameplay.background shot. For whatever reason I really like that.

Tomorrow and the next day I will be traveling through three states I have never before visited: Oklahoma, Texas, and Louisiana. I have no idea what the roads or weather will be like, nor do I know how frequent safe stopping areas are.

I debated putting this in the terrified thread, but I realized it sounded more like an adventure than something scary :v

I'm going to college at the University of Oklahoma, as it happens. It's...er...flat. It's hot during the summer, but it's not that bad right now. People are very friendly (if somewhat closeminded). Driving it will be very boring.

You don't have to worry about weather. It'll be sunny for the next week at least, and in any case tornado season is in the spring.

So I had the inspiration to visit a Family Video, and rent Shin Megami Tensei IV, because holy shit do I want to trust Atlus, but the game's trailer is just stupidly underwhelming to the max, and 50 dollars is a lot of money.

And I actually have to say, every intuition of mine was 100% spot on. The characters are flat and unengaging, the setting and how you're thrust into it is just arbitrary and stupid, it really does feel like the first 2 hours of the game were made by someone who was completely new to game design and then someone that was actually experienced had to make last minute edits all over the place cause the pacing is just jerky and weird. Then there's these weird difficulty spikes where SURPRISE the game just fucks you and there's nothing you can do about it.

It's really an awful sign when I'm like MST3K'ing the game in my head as I'm playing it. Really, it's the innately interesting mechanics and Atlus' stellar voice work that manage to pull it through and make it juuuust entertaining enough to be playable. Really, nurturing your monsters is the best part of the game after getting into it, everything else is just falling flat on it's face.

Makes me happy I didn't fall for the bundle deal where you bought Shin Megami Tensei IV and FE Awakening for a 30 dollar rebate. I'd have been pissed to blow that much money on this game, even if I was getting it discounted basically down to 20 bucks.
