Semi-reoccurring dream (which is to say one with parts of it that were reoccurring, but parts original) made me realize the best goddamn configuration for a college campus building in freaking ever. You know those giant plastic things in stuff like chuck-e-cheese (I think. It's been a long goddamn time) or the outdoor playgrounds that certain fastfood joints have/had? You know, cubes with plastic dome windows connected by tubes and with the occasional chute/slide thing coming out of it? One of those. But the size of a freaking building.

Classrooms would be interspersed throughout, probably sometimes in ball pits. Never in squares or whatever. No repeating patterns, likely nothing with a direct Z level path to each other. Ladders, inclines, slides, maybe free drops or ziplines around. That.

Now, concessions to usability would probably come through scheduling (so people actually have time to get to/find their next class) and high-tech classrooms so folks don't need to carry much around and like safety netting and shit and their might need to be some kind of 'net conference thing built into the classrooms for the disabled (or an alternate campus for those who physically can't get around. This probably wouldn't be a very wheelchair friendly place, unfortunately.) or something.

But that. That would be the best goddamn thing in ever. All buildings need to be built like that, but especially schools and places of higher learning, academia, and research.

Electrocrat? Bloodcrat? Voicecrat?

Hm... What do you guys think? I think it needs more greek then just crat.
The Greek word for blood is hemo-, or possibly haemo-. And looking up "Greek word for voice", I'm getting either "Echo" or "phon-".

Chinese novel "The Plum in the Golden Vase."

Just that.  That's all.  It is SO good.

Also, I finished Mrs. Dalloway last week and it's catapulted Virginia Woolf to the "top author of the last century" in my mind.  Before I preferred Faulkner and Camus, but she's... I dunno.  She's lovely.

Also, remember that baby that was essentially cured of HIV a week or so again? It's got 14 adults to keep it company now.

Now, sorry to shit on the happies, but I'm curious how long it is until HIV gains resistance...

Science marches on, good sir. If that is the case, then we will work our way past that too.

The Vast Mergesort is complete!

I have too many cards. There was something calming to organizing the little bastards, but it still took too many hours.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

Admin 2 isn't my boss, I don't even deal with him 99% of the time. But he recognized that I'm right. Two people both seeing a problem and fighting bureaucracy and organizational apathy together is a pretty awesome bond. And Admin 2 has been throwing his weight around. Admin 1 is now removed from the issue and someone else from that team assigned to focus his complete and total attention on it. Conference call on Monday, I'm invited and I get to sit back and listen to Admin 2 tear half a dozen new assholes into people. It will be glorious.  :D

This bit is probably also important to think about:

Quote
In the case of the Mississippi baby, we know she was exposed to HIV, had HIV in her blood, and that at least some cells in her blood were found with sleeping virus -- though we will likely never know if those cells were from the child or maternal cells that had been transmitted during pregnancy or birth. Was the baby infected with HIV and, thus, cured?

To many of the researchers at the conference, the answer is "no." It seems more likely that her treatment prevented her, after exposure to HIV, from being infected.

Sounds sort of like those other 14 people might have had a similar issue, although its hard to say.

It's not really cured, but the infection is under control while they stopped the treatement.

And considering the nature of HIV (and the form of its cells), it may still be a long time before we find a cure (or a vaccine).

(or a vaccine).
Thing is, HIV has a high mutation rate and... well, it'd attack the cells that would attack it.
Exactly, and the part that doesn't mutate is next to impossible to reach.

Is there a way to modify it so it won't mutate?
