Date no one is realistically better than stringing someone along if you don't reciprocate their feelings.  That's not a decision I would take as a blow to self-worth.

I think I'll die an old maid (or whatever you'd call the male version)
Old, drunk, and stoned out of your brains?

Most possibly, but don't forget video games.

I swear, I'll still play 'em when I'm 50 and stuff.

It was mostly the "dump by email in the middle of the week" decision that was a blow to self-worth.

I'm basically going with the "get my education and hope I meet a cute young mathematician" route.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

You guys really make me feel good about my apparent inability to find a relationship =)  Please, expound on your theories.
Well, I can't see any other way for it to exist. There is no "perfect person", in a singular sense. There are tons of people you could be happy with with, in different ways. My point was there is not one person to focus on. I don't know, maybe someone who has lost all faith in everything at 13, and emotionally disowned his mother isn't the best person to ask about love.

I understand that we kinda spoil stuff in the thread, but you may want to post this stuff over there. It makes you happy sure, but anything more than a post and reaction to reactions would be better fitting there.
