as it turns out that the stone sinks only after ALL of the ice has melted

Wait, what?  That implies the stone is the density of water.

No it doesn't. This is a physics problem. It is modeled in a simplified way.

EDIT: Oh yeah, it is D. I thought C and D were switched for some reason.

So basically Ice is very, very light?

Also: first to answer correctly (if only by dumb luck)

The question doesn't imply it, but what Il Palazzo said implied it. If the stone can only sink after all the ice surrounding it has melted, that implies that the density of the stone is infinitesimally higher (i.e. higher but by an infinitely small margin) than that of water, otherwise it would sink while it still had some finite volume of ice attached to it.

Well, it wasn't chronological so much as "What happens when a) the ice melts and b) the stone falls".

Or at least that's how I read it.

Uh, damn, need to rerail... uh...

Well, it's now the weekend.  And I don't have too much work to do.

Should be able to just mess around and play videogames with friends.  Cool.

By the way, what does happen if the rock is made of salt? I know salt is solluble, but how much does that influence the experiment?

I mean "is released from ice cube", or whatever was the wording in the task description. Meaning that there never exists a situation when there is some ice without the stone.

G-Flex. Your math holds, yes. But I think that your physics is faulty. The problem only states that the cube starts as floating, not that it has to stay afloat for the remainder of it's lifetime. It is bound to sink as it melts - there is just no other way.

The question implies that the ice cube floats for the entirety of the time that the stone is attached to it. I already said this.

It would be only possible if the stone was less dense than water.

Not quite. There can easily be some ice left if there's a big enough hole in it.

Exactly. Else it would've start sinking before it got released.

Well water was never known for its intelligence.

Il Palazzo:

... What? No. Listen.

The ice cube, with the stone attached, remains floating. The stone only sinks when it becomes detached from the ice cube. None of this implies that the stone is less dense than water. If it were, it wouldn't sink at all!

The ice cube starts out floating, with the stone attached. Eventually, at some point, the stone becomes detached, yet there is still a finite volume of ice there.

These questions aren't meant to be mean or tricky.  Although I'm sure we could do questions like that too :P.

Not sure if it's necessary, as I really need to go now, and who's gonna fight for the cause of C without me?

What would the thread be called, though?  "Questions, puzzles and riddles" or something?
