Here's a little something everyone might be interested in:

openCanvas 1.1

It's an application mainly for sketching that is designed for use with pressure sensitive drawing tablets. The best part about it? It has a network feature which means a bunch of people can share a canvas together. Not only that but you can export your sketches as recordings, called events, that you can open up with openCanvas which will playback the entire drawing from start to finish.

Could be a good aid in explaining how to do various things, or just showing the method to your madness. Plus there's always multiplayer dick drawing sessions, because it's the internet you know.

Spreggo, holy shit, that portrait is fantastic.  I don't know what to crit.  Great work.

Davion, that looks like a lot of fun.  We should definitely have a DF forums OC session.

!Critique Please!

Ok guys, my first attempt at making something on Photoshop.
Created using the extremely spiffy Photoshop CS4

Comments welcome...

-----
Wasn't really supposed to be anything.
First I started with a thin strip of gradient white on the bottom, using the gradient tool.
I then used the smude tool to push, pull and shape the white band, until it looked rather milk like when you spill it.

Where there is thinner white, I blurred to meld it into the background.
For the big tufts, I used the sponge and burn tools to add slight shadow, making it seem less flat.

What do you guys think?

Thanks for the kind words :D
I just got home from work so I'll have to wait until tomorrow to finish it...

Davion: definitely a good idea, we should do a drawing meetup via openCanvas.

Also, for anyone without access to photoshop, openCanvas is a pretty good platform to get started painting.

Killas: My lovely assistant here says that your smoke looks a lot like dry ice sublimating.

Perhaps the next step is to paint in some highlighted ridges with a soft brush. Here's what I mean:

That might be hard if you don't have a tablet, though. You could try drawing in white shapes with the lasso tool on new layer, and then blurring them somewhat to get the same effect. I haven't been very sucessfull at smoke so far though, so maybe I'm giving bad advice.  :-\

Spreggo, you've gotten amazingly good since you first started posting.

Davion, I like your style.

Well, I tried what you recommended Spreggo, but the fact that I don't have a tablet is really annoying.

And well, it seemed kinda hard to apply white to white, so I made a new shape in red, a swirl. I think it looks kinda like a rose.

This time, I added a white 'highlight' layer, swirling it in similar motions.
It adds a sense of depth to it...

What do you guys think?

Killas[SiN], thanks!  It was about 3 hours, which is quick for me because I am inefficient.

Your smoke and rose look pretty good, but be careful drawing with a mouse; good way to hurt your wrist.  Do you have access to a scanner, or possibly a digital camera?  That's another good way to show drawings.  Anyway, keep practicing and developing your art!

so does that count as Godwin's law then?

anyway, nice Nazi, balathastrius, but his face kinda looks a bit too similar to the drow you did before... unless they're the same person...

It all makes sense now.
Technically that would make the Jews elves.

Huh, do you think so?  I actually get that fairly often; that my faces are too similar.  It's pretty embarrassing.  I've been working on it, though.

But Drow are elves, too!  Drow hate everyone; that's sort of why I like them.  ALL MUST BE SUBJUGATED BEFORE THE SPIDER GODDESS!

Nazi drow... hmm.  Now there's an idea.

Well, the drow hate the surface elves more than anything else, because they were the ones who forced them underground.

Actually, I thought the nazi looked a lot like Indiana Jones in disguise.

I finished up that portrait about as far as I want to push it.

That is incredible every time I see it.
I can't really see any differences apart from the shading, and althought it might just be a trick of the perspective, her coat thingy goes straight in a line downwards. To me, it doesn't look natural.

Thanks,
I have a digital camera, but I don't have a scanner. Also, I've developed a method of not hurting your hand in photoshop.
Hold the mouse with your thumb and forefinger holding the sides, leave a gap so you can pivot the mouse easily. (Bleh, I suck at explinations) Or you could just use a small mouse like I do.

Also, about your Nazi, the detail starts off good, but drifts rather somewhat towards his feet. The dude's bootstraps aren't up to par.

Oh yeah, that reminds me. A couple months old picture I took of one of me n' my mate's doodles:

Spoiler: Warning! Ugly Dude (click to show/hide)

And here's a little treatise I wrote on it:
