This more or less what you've got in mind Itnetlolor?

Yep, just about. Try to follow the refined image. I think I more or less have it down. I didn't study the full description yet, but I have the general idea at least.

This should be a rough version, of course all the images are omitted, and my modelling of the gorgeous dwarven lasses are imperfect.

Edit: spelling.

HOLY CRAP!!!

Now how are we going to place images on it?

I suppose between each support (where the visible panels are: IE- diamond, polygon, semi-octagon) as well as parts of the supports, and even the dwarves themselves, could be where the images are placed.

I think it's possible to fit them in there. How good are your texturing skills?

Armoks skills of spikes and such is without doubt, but wouldn't a statue with engravings show off the engravings as the main feature....?

I always thaught planepacked looked like four dwarves holding a block of highly engraved wall, and the dwarves were covered in rings spikes and ect.

to me most engraved statues look alot like....
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

and undefined statues were lone dwaves holding up plates, or floor tiles...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

But thats just me and Armoks is good if you prefer spikes more...

Placing images on it is easy: ON the spikes, and the flat supports, etc. and also in between... in fact I designed it so that virtually every surface could have engravings. Also, those dwarves shuld be whatever spesific dwarves are described on it, and the model has few enough polygons to put miniature versions of itself for recursion, etc. The hanging rings are already on there as well as the menacing spikes, and some minor 3d models that people make could easily be incorporated.
My texturing skills are great as long as we're talking procedural stuff, but actual image textures like you would have here I am a total noob at, and I made a few things with the model that in hindsight will make texturing harder. However if someone else know about it it's a simple single polygon mesh, the dwarves are place holders anyway and I did nothing fancy beyond some light and cranking the render settings way up.
It may look epic, but I didn't spend that much effort on this really, I had planed to simply show the rough idea and it spiralled a bit form that but not to far actually, there is plenty more stuff I could do.

random musing: I should have some spikes menace with spikes of spikes, forgot that part, but it is easily added...

The images are ON the spikes.

I tried doing some 3d modeling. I have a couple of things WIP, for the hell of it.

How did you make it? As in, did you do mirroring? Considering, from the look of it, it's both x/y mirroring, should make texturing easier. Just reflect and reverse the textures accordingly.

Then again; I'm also a half-decent modeler with crap texturing skill. Hopefully there should be plenty of tutorials online that take care of this.

It's a shame that individualizing/texturing faces is harder than it looks/sounds. At least, with my level of experience. And the wraparound method is painful.

EDIT:
x/y mirroring only (obviously) works with 1/4 the whole model, of course. Just in case anyone got lost with what I meant.

Heh...
I always thought of Planepacked as something like a Globe, with smaller ones dotted at different locations over its face, on these smaller kind, they are numbered or sorted in a way that it would be easy to tell which is which...

Then under it there is a Plaque which on it reads what each Locater represented, much like a Shopping Mall directory you know...

this is how i always saw plane packed: just nothing but one massive monolith, with the images wrapping around it in a spiral. i also thought that the 'last' image was on the roof, and was the final image of planepacked in its full form.

I actualy didnt use any mirroring, as far as I can remember I simply made a polygon sphere, bevelled some vertices I think, then a deformer (sqush I think, not sure), then lots and lots of various extruding in some nifty almost itertive ways, and then some minor tweaking. The hanging rings and the dwarves holding it up are not part of the mesh, and I probably forgot something.

By the way, I did something stupid yesterday and messed up with the saving, but luckily I had saved after the actual statue itself was finished, but if you wonder why any new shots have different lightning that's why.

Ok, progressing a bit, I finished the limestone exept for the engravings probably, and next time I do anything with this it'll be the varius material encrustings, spikes, decorations, hanging rings etc. and after that probably the easier ones of the engravings.

I realized something making this, I am not sure were the limits for "NSFW" go with any great precision; I had thought to do this an the same style as gret statues in history have been made, and while doing research I realized that many of them are a bit... unclothed. It will certanly be safer FW than for example David, but I am unsure how people interpret artsyness and how this varies with culture and how that affects their relation to that work etc. And we also have the fact abaut the forum guidlines, "Do not discuss sexually oriented material" seems quite ambigus, and it mentions discusion spesificaly despite images obvisly being worse, so is it based of intent and one could post images of david or similar levels if the intention were clear, or will simply evrything that could vaugly be interpreted as nudity be stuck down without pardon or context?
And just so you don't get the wrong idea, I do not intend to do something even as explict as devid even if it IS allowed, I just ask just in case because I'm paranoid.

I am 99.9% sure this image is no problem, you probably wont notice anything might be wrong unless you know were to look for it and even then I've seen worse in the fanart thread, so in the literal interpretation of the acronym it's SFW, but spoiled just in case:

Wow. Much better.

As far as I can tell, yours seems to be the best of the bunch. And as for the prudes that confuse art with porn; they're just crybabies.

I would agree, art of the era usually were bereft of clothing. BTW, the statues add to the artistry, like the struggle of accomplishing such a feat, and holding it in display for eternity.

Suitable for such an epic artifact, as this.

EDIT:
Spelling. Sorry 'bout that.

I say if you hit anything that might be NSFW just plow on through and just spoiler it with the statement that it may be overly graffic for an office. Don't censor yourself, let the art flow.
