my newest suggestion is about something appearing in higer Z-levels,so te player can see, using a white open space icon, so inadveture mode you get noticed of the clouds too.
a really minor suggestion

I agree with Urist. Steampunk is like Darth Vader winning Holland's Next Top Model. It would be awesome but not something I'd like in this game.
Unfortunately dying involves the amputation of the entire body from the dwarf.

i think it is a very simle, nice sugestion. nothing fancy, like building on the clouds or something. just some mist at a higher z level. could be expandes to fog at ground level.

the only porblem i have with it has to do with the current implementation of gasses. i do not like how they obscure everything. fix that and this sugestion gets an A+

Tallest buildings don't reach even halfway to the lowest clouds!

Gasses, liquids and lots of other things relating to water need to be worked out before clouds, realistic erosion, and water effects can be worked on.

Here on Earth maybe. But I have it on good authority that the world dorfs live in is not only flat and square-shaped, but also has unusually low clouds.

If this is implemented, players will have to build cloud-strainers to get the water out of the cloud, leaving cloud silk behind to be made into pants.

BUT FORSOOTH! Do not attempt to vanquish a cloud-eyed Hawk!
They shall leave your workers in the shape of strained pasta!

Like, here on Earth? Because if thats what you mean, you have clearly never lived in a city. Or on a mountain. Or anywhere up high. Sure, you're not getting right up there with the real fancy cloud types, but Stratus clouds are fairly common. (All cloud types with Stratus or Strato in their name occur very close to the ground, but not touching it)

If your building on a mountain, of course, Orographic clouds are pretty much a constant.

I like this suggestion.

perhaps in-game clouds could be turned off in the raws, so they would be optional

The hangar in which the Hindenburg was built was so big, it had it's own internal convection systems complete with clouds and rain.
