Perhaps you will be given a punch in the face if you believe you'll disintergrate, just to tell you that you did not.

And what if you die when you are meditating and have managed, however briefly, to completely empty your mind...

Then the whole place would probably go blank, wreaking up quite a lot of your work in the process.

It's a nice thought that our afterlife would be configured for us, but if our nowlife isn't why should our afterlife be? It might just be a road; crossing over from the prelife to the nowlife, to the afterlife, then the afterlife becomes the nowlife and with the original nowlife the prelife.

I already posited something like that.

And then I replied with something along the lines of "it's all futile anyway"...

Yes, and the way you phrased it means that it can also be taken as an endorsement of reincarnation, but that's unlikely.

If this is the afterlife of another realm, it implies things.

The Catholic perspective on the afterlife would be terrifying for most people.

"Ohhhh nooooo, I'm going to lose all my sense of self! But I like being me!"

I'm not sure what the perspectives of the other major religions are, but they're probably similar, like Nirvana for Budhhism.

As for myself, like I said earlier, it doesn't really matter. The question of whether there is or is not an afterlife is immaterial, since what happens while we're alive is the whole point of being alive.

Do I keep missing large parts of my own religion? I'm pretty sure I am. As I understood it, what was on offer was paradise for eternity. Still, I like to follow the Discworld idea of the afterlife is what you make it.

Thinking about it, mine is not the best religion if you want things to make sense, starting with the crucifixion and going downhill from there. Thank god it doesn't affect me, eh? Eh?

*raises poker*

EH?

Ooooh, you're Catholic? Yay, I'm not alone in my demographic!

It's implied, and I think some Popes have written about this, and a lot of the theologians I study under think the same way, that Paradise isn't a 'place' of any sort, but rather a state of being - a return to the closest possible state as we are to "Pure Act", which is the Christian God. That would necessarily mean a complete loss of self, but I'm pretty sure that Christians are supposed to care more about other people than themselves. ;D

Oh. Man, people just don't mention these things. I signed up to help the poor and do good in this world. Then, I learned about the inquisition.

I feel so confused. Christianity as a religion can have a strange affect on its worshipers. The message of 'spread peace and tolerance' somehow got watered down to 'shove red hot pokers up the bottoms of those who look at you funny'. Seriously, it's like a drug except it has no side effect apart from those you create for yourself.

Yeah, Christians are communist.
Jews are Socialists.

Muslims are capitalists. (+ socialism)

But in the reality, it's... WAY OFF DERAILED.
