I learned many things playing this challenge.

Today, while I already knew that dropping water onto magma creates obsidian, I learned that dropping magma onto water creates cave-ins.

only if the water is greater than 2 deep.

And actually, it won't e'en then if the new obsidian is where it won't cave in. So, if you make a surface-le'el magmaduct to the ocean, you'll get a disc of obsidian, rather than stoning the entire ocean.

Been sick, ha'en't been playing. :-/

edit: You made me fear for my approach to casting the walls of alternating, but then I remembered my experience with ocean, and things'll work.

only if the water is greater than 2 deep.

I had this setup:

Code: [Select]

   M

X~~~~~X
.......

M = magma
~ = water
X = wall
. = ground

And I was getting constant "a section of the cavern has collapsed" messages.  There was definitely only one level of water, not two or more.

Also, you can manufacture vomit at a smelter.  Subsequently removing the smelter spews vomit over a surprising area.

Back to playing. Caravan from mountainhome whee. Four-squad SEIGE? at least.
Why did the guy building my high-in-the-sky cancel? . . Ninja crossbowgobs? Uh oh. *marks population:91

Perhaps I should make a ninja trap, since the ninjas seem to consistently come from the tile SW of pipe. I mean, I haven't used my artifact spiked ball yet.

Well my economy got started, we'll see how my labor force of miners and wall/floor building masons take it. Meanwhile I made a bunch of shops (6 or so). Every single one of them was brought by my overseer lol.

The dragon appeared.  I spend awhile planning on how to capture it; eventually designate enough cage traps at enough chokepoints that I think I'll get it.  Unpause and watch it.

It sits for awhile.

It sits longer.

It sits longer.

THEN IT MOVES.  IT'S COMING FOR MY FOR....oh, it jumped into the volcano and died.

Kind of anti-climatic, really.  And it's not like it was fighting anything and dodged in -- it went around my fort to the volcano, and then just decided to take a swim.

Oh well.

Sadly, I probably won't be able to finish my green glass tower that's floating on an island in the magma pipe, but I'm proud of it even with a half-finished tower :)

Things seem to do that near the magma pipe on occasion.

As we're getting down to the last days, how are you guys feeling? Do you think you'll be able to get your forts finished in time? Also, to those who are finished, how confident are you feeling?

I'm looking forward to getting this judging underway!

I learned many things playing this challenge.

Today, while I already knew that dropping water onto magma creates obsidian, I learned that dropping magma onto water creates cave-ins.

What I suspect was happening here was that the Magma was cooling into Obsidian above the water, and then dropping 1z into the water, since it was unconnected.

I) Magma is dropped over water.
II) Magma Collides with the water beneath it, and cools into Obsidian
III) Obsidian block drops 1 z level through water.

Code: [Select]
I.          II.         III.
   M
   ↓            O
X~~~~~X      X~~~~~X      X~~O~~X
.......      .......      .......

M = magma
O = obsidian
~ = water
X = wall
. = ground

I'm feeling reasonably good. I suspect mine will be the most dwarfy in one respect and about the least dwarfy in all other respects. It's a fairly straightforward fortress without a lot of nifty clever machinations, traps, and such. I think in terms of making the place survivable, it succeeds, since that's what the challenge was, that's what I tried to stay most true to.

I'm just happy that I finished my main goals and learned a bunch of new stuff.

Which reminds me that I need to pack the place up for submission.

I'm still 10 seasons to go but its progressing faster now. I hit a point where the game time was advancing excessively slowly because I had 5-6 different things to all manage at once. Now that I'm through that the time it takes me to advance a season is a lot shorter. Hopefully I'll be able to make the deadline.
