I actually suspect that the assassination attempt against his dreamself /didn't work/. He simply went 'dead' because his physical self died pre-game. So they moved his body to the tomb.

Could be. My own guess was that the assassination attempt didn't work, because I assert baselessly that Dersite intel on the kids was based on PreScratch versions. For instance, "The Prospit boy is allergic to peanuts," referring to John. This doesn't make sense now that I know how the Scratch works (and that it creates an internally consistent universe, it seems), but I do not care.
