I think it started with Spades Slick being confirmed as Karkat's stabfather.

Also, at one point someone drew a picture of Diamonds Droog and Kanaya being FASHION MORAILS because they are so classy, but it kinda looked like a father taking his daughter out for a fancy dinner or something.

After that the fandom just kinda latched onto it and never let go because it's awesome.

Diamonds Droog is used for Aradia because he is her exile, and sometimes for Kanaya because they go well together. 

That's really about it.

I could be evidence that the other two are and he's the only straight one, completely secure with his own masculinity to not need a female analogue. Or it could be a road that will not lead to any good.
