Hmm. Maybe one of the Quills were used in the forging of Bro's sword? Or, anything can damage the Beat Mesa, but the Quills are required in order to make an adequate scratch and cause The Scratch.

Or maybe the Hero of Time's guardian (Bro) is gifted with time powers of his own. This would explain his ability to move so quickly and also his mad puppetry skills. Thus, this allows him to perform the Scratch, and by instinct start it, but he died before it was apparent he needed to finish.

As for why this explains anything, I believe that Dave has to perform the Scratch. Because once it's started, he can go back in time and flee the universe with the others.
