After a little more screwing around, here's my proposed protocol for constructing a single magma pipeline:

  • Pick a magma vent and start a more-or-less regular-sized fort there. This will be a pumping station. Set up a fort, you're going to be here a while.
  • Set up the magma pumps to pull from the lowest z-level you can get to. Do not be a dumbass who makes pipes or pump towers more than one tile wide.
  • Build a magmaduct to the edge of the map. Walls can't get closer than 5 tiles, so cover those last tiles with drawbridges instead. Raise them with a lever, and then deconstruct the lever. You might want to build bridges at regular intervals along your pipe so that dwarves can get over it.
  • This fort can build magma workshops! You're going to make supplies for the rest of your pipeline. If you have sand, make about a million green glass corkscrews, pipes, and blocks. Otherwise, dig up the map looking for iron and nickel, and make those into pump parts instead. If you have bauxite, make it all into mechanisms.
  • Make a dump zone for your magma-engineering parts near the end of your pipe and dump all the stuff there. You can also throw in weapons, seed bags, and an anvil. Anything you put here, you don't need to embark with later!
  • Abandon this site.
  • Embark on the next site of your pipeline, then abandon. This will claim that land as a site where the game will remember objects. Since you're abandoning, don't spend any points on dwarf skills; buy interesting things like steel or bauxite which will be nice to have on the reclaim.
  • Visit the previous site as an adventurer. Pick up the stuff in the supply dump, walk over the border into the next site, and drop it. This may take several trips, and someone may want to look into the plausibility of building a water-based supply washer that will move everything automatically. When you're done moving stuff, go to the end of the pipeline, walk in a straight line into the other site, and then succumb to starvation. If you didn't already claim and abandon the next site, this won't work and all the stuff will vanish!
  • Reclaim the working site. Use the dead adventurer as an alignment marker to know where the pipeline is on the previous site. Dig a 20x20 pit to the bottom of the map near the border (or larger if you're working from a very tall magma vent); this will be the magma relay tank. Use your supplies to construct a pump system to move magma out of the relay tank. Use the stone excavated from building the pit to construct the next section of pipeline, to another edge of the map. Establish a new supply dump near the pipeline head, and move anything interesting you didn't use.
  • Repeat steps 6-9 until you get the pipe to where you want it. Each step will take at least two years because of abandons, and possibly more depending on construction time.
  • Visit the original pumping station as an adventurer, and turn on the magma!
  • Wait until all the magma on this site is in the relay tank in the next site, then walk over to that site and turn on the pumps.
  • Repeat step 12 until the magma is where you want it

It might be faster and more magma-efficient to make a line of pumps each feeding into the next instead of just having a simple pipeline, but that will require a lot of pump parts. Sand would help a lot there.

Some thoughts for turning this all into a massive, worldwide magma collection network:
  • Survey the world first and figure out where all the magma vents are and what the most efficient layout will be.
  • Have geographical groups of magma vents combine their output at intermediate collection stations. These, and the pipelines following them, will need larger relay tanks like this one.
  • The central magma repository should probably be sited on an entire region tile (containing an elf city), or else broken up into several closely-related sites, and extend from the lowest to highest z-levels. It needs to be compartmentalized so that the magma from different branch pipelines doesn't just spread out and evaporate. It needs to be sited on a river to fill with waterwheels to power the pumps for the enormous plumbing network that will allow the whole thing to be instantaneously poured out into the world. It also needs to contain a giant maze of tunnels suspended in the magma for adventurers to explore, where one wrong lever pull will expose them to the magma.
  • In many places it would be advisable to pair the magma pipeline with a water pipeline. If anyone can design a reliable closed perpetual-motion machine, this would be the time and place to do it. You may also wish to plan carefully to deforest wooded areas and relay the logs to deserts.
  • For bonus points, put all gems and precious metals discovered during construction in the supply relay dumps, eventually collecting them all in special vaults in the central repository.
  • For extra bonus points, create a project to harvest all of the world's accessible adamantine and send it to the central repository.
  • For super special extra bonus points, collect all of the world's adamantine first and use it to build the central repository.
  • This is the ultimate realization of thinking about playing the world instead of individual forts, and would make a fine succession project.

You're in a siege? Screw water aquedects to help your wounded.
Set the goddamn world on fire and as the magma pools behind the shocked invaders, your champions suicidally charge at them.

For the ultimate mega project, try to build a Bronze Colossus. ...Like the actual Colossus.

At least 20 Z levels high, and when viewed in 3d, it must look like the Colossus.

The idea of collecting all the adamatine in the world into one fortress is pretty awesome. I like the "playing the world" focus too. But the amount of work involved is just staggering.

Build a WoW style raid dungeon which is playable in Adventure Mode. With trash pulls (captured globins, orcs, ect). And with bosses (captured collosi, dragons, ect, in combination with traps (both the ones in the b-T panel and home built ones with pressure plates and such)). Make sure to have epic lewts drop as well via rooms which can only be accessed after the bosses go down.

Bonus points for having more than 10 boss encounters in a huge dungeon which takes hours to complete.

Extra bonus points for making multiple dungeons which are required to be done in order (via atunement items/levers).

Of course you could always embark with a human town on your map. Then you build a huge roof riddled with grates over said town. THEN you pour magma over it. End result is a rain of magma or somesuch onto the helpless burning town. Or, alternately, create a valley of adamantine bridges. Fill the world with magma, then lower the drawbridges as a seige walks down the road. No,  I don't know how we're getting rid of the magma from the world. What do you take me for, an Elf?

As for Adventurer, you could always build a huge steel fortress above ground on the tallest volcano you can find. Then, dig away the rest of the volcano. Now you have something like 30 Z levels to climb as an adventurer. Bonus points if you have magma slop over the sides at certain intervals. (you'd have to sculp the cliff a bit so you can get up there....)

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

über extra triple bonus points for someone uploading such a map... someone could make an epic story of Urist McAdventurer conquering the dungeon :D

You know what could be an interesting variation of this?

Flood your entire embark location with magma several (dozen) Zs deep with a small area (somewhat livable to wait out the whole time with survivors), and when you've reached a desired depth of magma in your embark region, visit in Adventure mode and run like hell.

The great molten jello cube of burning hot death. There's always room for some more.

MegaProject: Magma-Tsunami Fuck the World UNLEADED!!! (You though Boatmurdered's was madness...)
AKA
Death by Jell-O / M&M World (a combination; Jell-O blob melts the world, and hardens into a thick candy shell with a big fortress in the shape of a giant "m" in the center.)

EDIT: Fix'd

MegaProject: Magma-Tsunami

And the whole world burned, burned, burned,
And we’re the one’s that did it!
It burned, burned, burned,
While all the creatures ran and died.
It burned, burned, burned,
And things were very dwarfy.
And the Elves ran and cried like a bunch of little babies
Waa waa waah!
In the Flood of 1018!
