Sparring - Guy won't spar
« on: July 05, 2009, 11:24:21 pm »

Just to say first : I know how to make my guys spar..
Currently i've got 16 champion wrestlers (lol, I can't seem to get any weapons at all..really busy at the moment, and for some reason my weaponsmith won't forge the darn things i have queued up in the metalsmith's forge)
So I have my 16 champion wrestlers (which includes 5 fortress guard ones) sparring in my barracks, which easily fits them all.
Then i have this other guy, who's wrestling skill is just "Wrestler" (No label) but i gave him a sword, cause i want a swordsdwarf. But... he won't spar. If i take his sword away, he still won't spar. He just sits around and it just says "Soldier". I tried removing him from squads, and tried adding, but nothing. I tried deactivating him, then reactivating. I tried making some on duty, just in case there's some "max sparrers at a time" limit. What is up? Is he just too scared or something?
Also, offtopic: how the heck does anybody handle more than like, 10 dwarves? i've got 51 and it's just so many people, and not enough room. I've no idea what to do with any of them..
If you read this all, thank you.

Does he have someone to spar with?
Is he brain damaged?
Either one of those could be the problem - if there isn't another swordsdwarf to spar with, he won't spar.  AFAIK, swords and wrestling do not go well together.

To deal with excess dwarves, just designate every stone on your map to be dumped into a 1x1 garbage dump - makes your fortress look much cleaner, and it gives the illusion of dwarves being useful.
Really, though, I usually end up with ~12 useful dwarves, a small military, and then about 80 dwarves that do not do anything useful.  They dump stone, they move things from stockpile to stockpile, etc.
With the burrow system coming out, that should change though...

Sounds like a classic example of nerve damage. Once the neck/brain/etc get even lightly wounded the dwarf will never spar again. You'll need to scroll down the wound list to check.

For larger dwarf populations, I tend to find that the 80 dwarf mark is about where dwarves start arriving that I have absolutely no use for. Megaprojects are also useful for employing masses of otherwise useless dwarves. You can also create giant farms and assign a number of immigrants planting duty and just dump everything that they grow until they reach a decent skill level (Letting the plants rot halves the xp and you still have to deal with the refuse hauling for the withered plant).

My current fort is sitting around the 150 dwarf mark and I'm rarely running high idler numbers. Although I am periodically dumping stones lying around my catacombs to keep the haulers busy...

Whoo, quick replies.
I checked his wound list and it just has "neck" listed (like any other) except it's gray, not white, but it doesn't list an injury to the right (I'm assuming thats how it works, from what I've seen?)
And no, he has nobody to spar with when he's using his sword but when i take his sword away he still refuses to spar. Since i last posted i found one of my champion wrestlers doesn't spar at the moment, his attributes are maxed..one of my best.
Anyways, i figured out why my guy wasn't smithing. Apparently he can't make iron cages? I'll get another guy a sword and see how it works.

Grey means light damage. Basically, a bruise.

There seems to be some sort of disease spreading. I now have 5 guys who won't spar. None are injured. =/ Anyways, going to bed right now.

Grey neck means he's broken.  Retire him to the guard or put him on "first alert" perimeter patrol.

put him on "first alert" perimeter patrol.

This is the optimal solution, as it'll let him keep getting combat experience even if he won't spar.

Uh, yellow is broken.

Dark gray is lopped off. I think we could agree that a dwarf with a lopped off head is a very bad thing. Exclusions are with Nobles, ofcourse.

Light gray is lightly wounded.

He was referring to the dwarf, not the wound.  Broken as in the dwarf is no longer a functional member of the military.

Or a Marskdwarf.  They'll still shoot at an archery range.

I have a dwarf who trained up pretty well as a wrestler and then as an axedwarf until she picked up a red lung and brown spine injury. She's plenty mobile although she gets winded a lot, and these days pretty much all she does is pop out kids. (At one point when her injury was at its worst though and she was still on bedrest, she did have a baby die due to dehydration, so that sucks.) I tried to assign her as a marksdwarf, though, and she hasn't yet done any training with the crossbow. She carries it around, but she hasn't ever gone to the archery range. Very strange.

Check her hands to see if she's carrying anything she shouldn't be.  Dwarves tend to rip each others' clothes off during sparring (especially wrestling training) and not drop them, which interferes with their ability to load and use ammo.  So if she's holding somebody's pants, mark them for dumping and she should be able to start archery training.

And make sure to look for a third gauntlet, they can be sneaky.

This assumes, of course, that you have practice ammo to use ;)

So there's no way to fix a "gray" neck? He won't ever spar again?

nope, nervous system injury as in real-life it will never heal.
Odd because i've had soldiers with gray nervous wounds that still spar, yet the dwarves without any wounds refuse to spar whatever i do...
