That's it, no more games...
« on: May 22, 2009, 07:04:38 am »

Literally. I'm swearing off of video games until June. This is mostly thanks to the game "Elona" which has been devouring massive chunks of my free time. Partly also because final exams are over and I just know I'm gonna get lazy if I don't take initiative now. I need to get back into writing and reviewing.

I find it's occasionally helpful to do without something for a month. I've previously given up soda, beer, and butter, and the end result is that I consume less of those now.

There's a possibility that this habit is a bit of latent Catholicism that I haven't been able to shake.

Forums aren't games, by the way. They're lifestyles.

So you can stay!

Heh. Yeah, I hadn't intended to stop visiting the forums. If anything the amount of time I spend here will likely increase now that my brain isn't being sucked out of my head by Elona. Little has two stories I haven't critiqued, and somebody else just posted a DF-based one. So I'll have plenty to do.

Good job--you get my respect.  I've had to wipe my hard drive of games many times before while in school.

Alternately: The Brick Testament. It's a really fun look at what the bible would look like if interpreted literally. With Legos.
Just so I remember

Harder than giving up something entirely is limiting your time for it...

For example, I will only play 4 hs per week.

THAT requires will...

When your timer reaches one hour and you want to keep playing but you musn't...

That's tough.

That's what I'm going for right now...

When the holidays come I'm gonna have a videogame frenzy for a couple of days... (hopefully including some friends) and then I'll just resume back to normal game playing...  :P

On the other hand do you really want to go with a strategy that's tougher to work with? If you're just testing your willpower then I suppose that's fine, but if you're actively trying to quit something, seems to me that it just becomes that much harder.

I've found that when I come off of a hiatus like this I'm much less likely to engage in the behavior  I was trying to cut back in. You get used to not having so much of the thing you were trying to avoid. From there it's pretty easy to set a limit like you suggest.

If it works for you it's fine... I've done it.

Quitting altoguether for a period of time works.

But never quit games forever!!

Games teach you, entertain you, develop your imagination, make you a better person...   ;D
