I wouldn't want skills to affect building, mining and stuff. Then it gets into grinding territory because people mine all the time. Combat is okay, it needs a revamp, but messing with mining and stuff would be annoying.

Where did you hear that? I remember Notch talking months ago about the serious difficulties posed by high increases, and he even mentions in the PAX video that the 1.8 height is the same as normal.
It's not exceedingly difficult.  It actually has already been done.
He just won't do it the correct way.
The best he's come up with is making it easier to adjust the height of chunks, which is completely useless; as doubling the map height will then double RAM usage, and bandwidth in MP.

Any mods that build a similar idea as DF? With realistic soils, stones, metals and stuff?

Like tin, copper, bronze, zinc, brass, all that stuff :)
IndustrialCraft has some of that...

I *really* hope he just has chunks as 16x16x16 and variable map height in chunks. Yep, chunks that might be variable in height and generated.

Would 16x16x16 chunks improve performance?

Would 16x16x16 chunks improve performance?
No, but the decrease would be minimal; easily offset by fixing some of the major screw-ups in his code.
It would also lend itself to nigh-infinite vertical distance.
You can't tell me that's not worth a minor performance hit.

No, it's no problem even if it comes with a performance hit. Even if it was considerable. I hope Notch either does it right or doesn't waste time doing it wrong.

I am disappointed with endermen.

And if Notch is more busy drinking bear and talking with random people from game companies, i will make a mod for cubic chunks and actual infinite height, no matter how much blood i have to loose, no matter how much sweat and no matter how much semen i will have to keep within my balls.

Would likely be easier to just start creating minecraft from nothing. As a bonus, you could do it in a real language, without the java attitudes of wastefully creating objects for everything, even temporary values.

I tried downloading and playing the YogBox, which is an assortment of many mods. Yet it causes massive amounts of lag, even with the AI mod left out. What could be causing such a  large amount of lag? What is different? I thought it was the pathing of the AI but the game still runs slowly without the AI.

A bunch of badly optimized code running in the background?
And the mods can't be helping much either :P

Well it seems to work on the computers of people who I have seen play on it, of course they also said that they have very high quality computers.

The thing is it's laggy, yet uses up no more memory/CPU then usual.
