Redstone made sense of:

Redstone is made up of fine particles of magnetic crystals. They are very small and the powerdery dust they are trapped in allows them to spin freely.

When at rest, redstone particles line up end-to-end and there is no activity in the wire. Redstone torches are basically generators. Whatever fuel source allows all regular torches to burn forever also powers redstone torches, but instead of creating a constant or alternating electrical current, it causes the normally static crystals to spin, producing a magnetic field that finally causes the normally static alignment of redstone crystals to flip back and forth.

This in turn activates nearby redstone, propagating the signal.

When a signal reaches a redstone torch with the right timing, it cancels out the activity in that torch through destructive interference. This timing is achieved by building a not gate.

Of course, when the crystals oscillate, some energy is released, producing the characteristic red light, and causing the inefficiency that necessitates signal boosters.

And of course, it is this shifting magnetic field that powers things like dispensers, doors, note blocks, and ignites TNT.

Of course, that doesn't actually work.  While the rotational energy could generate trace amounts of electricity (and thus power some GaAsP "LED") there wouldn't be any loss of energy in the magnet system.

Anyway, considering Bukkit for the Planehacked server. I'm probably going to get crowdcontrol, since we're getting really tired of creepers on the production server.

What I'd really need is an automatic backup system and maaaybe something that allows custom recipes, like cobble+sapling=mossycobble, or dirt+sand=clay. I'd like to have something that makes tree leaves occasionally spawn apples, too.

Anyone know of some good plugins along those lines?

CraftBook has the cauldron for custom recipes.

There's a simple backup plugin (I think it's called exactly that  ) just check the "admins" tools.
I'm not sure about the recipes thing, either admin, fun, or mech might be it.

Custom crafting recipes aren't possible, as, the actual display is still governed by the client.
There are other ways to combine things on the server side, however.

I'll recommend BMobs for the creeper thing though.
