So, I just generated a new world and found this waterfall in a cavern near the surface.

Not impressed yet? Look closer:

The shaft goes so deep that I found redstone ore at the bottom. That's right: a naturally-formed vertical shaft going from sea level to diamond level, plus a waterfall.

It doesn't connect to any other dramatic caves, but I think I'm keeping this world anyway.

Nice. While you're there, build a sand pyramid over the entrance and make it your home.

Heh, I have one that goes down, stops right where another one starts, and that one goes down to this epic lava/water filled area.

I've kinda messed with the awesomeness of the area by harvesting obsidian from the many magma pools, but it's still pretty cool down there.

I have a cave system so massive I've been exploring it for several weeks now. Several diamond blocks (yes, blocks), nearly a dozen iron stacks so far, and still not nearly done. From the surface, you can't see one entrance from another with distance set to far.

Runecraft is amazing.
Yeah. I miss our floating islands + runecraft server. That was the best Survival MP server I've seen. The awesome floating islands map with the teleporters was simply an awesome combination.

So is it possible to make a SMP construction protected from other players at all?

With shift+build I can't seem to think of any way to protect anything. All it takes are a few pillarjumps + a shift bridge. I suppose if you encased a block of obsidian in magma it might take a while to get in...but that's kinda boring.

What ever happened to the land claim flags?

People were idiots ranging form "I should be able to destroy everything and if you don't build defenses and defend said defenses 24/7 then you don't deserve your stuff" to more intelligent "What if people make a bunch of walls surrounding you and land-claim it?"

Easy.
The Wurm approach.
Make the land-claims require some form of upkeep.

http://notch.tumblr.com/

It's a Java-based Infiniminer-like game.  So far you can dig around, create 4 types of blocks and just build stuff.
The block types don't do anything special, besides grass tending to spread onto sunny dirt blocks.  There's empty caves on the map, too.
I really like how smooth it runs for a Java applet, and that I don't need silly extra stuff to run it.
The future features, including multiplayer, also seem promising, such as survival mode where you have to eat and build, or fortress mode where two maps connect to each other to duke it out.
Wow. Nostalgia.

But if you're running upkeep on an X*Y plot of land, I can wall it off with a 2X + 2Y plot of land. (X*Y*Z and 2X + 2Y + 2Z if we have to 'claim' all 3 dimensions.) Quadratic versus linear growth means that any decently-sized megaproject will have to maintain the upkeep on a vastly larger area of land than the wall surrounding it.  :(

Moreover, define "upkeep". I'll confess I've never played Wurm and thus don't know how their approach works... but I can't imagine land-claims would be much fun if you have to constantly scour the earth for diamonds or something to pay the upkeep. Kinda defeats the whole point of building something if you have to spend most of your time paying the taxes on the land or something.  ???

On a small enough server, you could just R0 it and say that you can't block off other people's work.
