Played around on an impromptu server today.

Was trawling around /b/ when I saw Minecraft thread asking if anyone wanted to play some SMP.

Surprisingly, a good time was had by all at the specified IP address - except for one poor schmuck who kept lagging out.

I am fantastic at trying to build underground roadways between large landmasses seperated by ocan, and then failing miserably at the last moment. For instance, today I miscalculated the position I was in when I began digging back upwards (hopefully to a different island) and then not only got caved in by sand, but also flooded half of my roadway with water. HOORAY.

For stuff like that i usually just wall up wherever I am before I dig upwards, that way you'll only flood a small section if you hit water.

That's harder when I do it because I do it like a stairway.

But I suppose I could still wall off a certain point before I believe I'll hit water. This pattern usually lets me avoid getting stuck in sand, though.

One block divot before you start the actual stairway
Code: [Select]
_..._
.\_/.
Water physics will make it not flow anywhere past that divot.

Or even just place signs.
Signs block water flow.

Just make sure to write "You shall not pass!" on the sign.

In fact, you don't even need to make a ditch, since water will opt to flow into only the lowest neighbor. Divots alone will suffice.

Code: [Select]
W.........W
W.x..x..x.W
W.........W
W.........W
would work to stop a flood. (W is wall, x is divot, . is floor, flood comes either direction.)

If he's going to be spending the time to make a 9-wide staircase, he should probably know whether or not he's going to hit water first.

You can make a trap where the floor falls out from under someone after a couple of seconds by stacking sand or gravel blocks on top of torches, but they have to do something to remove the first torch. The way the creator thought to do this was to just put it on the back of a block over a storage box.

*Above torch #1 is some water which will flow down and remove torch #2 which holds up a whole structure of sand blocks on torches.

I think it's possible to set up a trap that will drop a ton of sand into an enclosed space. Gonna have to hunt down the video I saw to get the detail though.
Using tnt is the only way I can think of.

Was playing on a private server with buddies. Rather enjoyed the Christmas capes! Although we were getting way too screwed over by creepers to pay much attention.
