Okay, I bought this game and tried it out, it seems like a good game so far but my question is how do you guys build doors and ladders and so on?

http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Crafting

When I try it nothing happens, I can not even build torches.
I can build axes, pickaxes and shovels fine as well as crates and workbenches but I simply can not build a door or torch (and possibly other as stuff as well)

EDIT: okay, my mistake, I tried indev instead of infdev

Did that misstake too.

Something to take note on: While sand blocks do fall smoothly, they don't make you fall smoothly. You fall straight through falling blocks, so don't think they can be some sort of falling cushion.

Yea, see that opening in the wall/ground on the right side of my pic with water flowing down and a bit of magma? I found that while I was digging the magmamoat.  It used to be all sand, but when I dug the first tile of the moat it all collapsed into a cave I didn't know was there.  I took falling damage and fell through the falling sand, and just barely managed to dig myself out before I died.  That is why that end of the moat is constructed blocks.  Sand is dangerous.

Tip 1011c: Do not place blocks near sand suspended in the air while above said sand.
If you are unsure as to whether sand is suspended or not, place a block while standing on something other then said sand.

So yeah, I guess obsidian is useless then?  Because I found some naturally occurring, in a gi-fucking-gantic cavern system.  I know some people like to mine around their area, but I prefer searching far and wide for exposed deposits.  Which is dumb, because I know there's ore RIGHT BEHIND every wall, but I don't want to waste any metal looking for metal.  Still haven't found any gold or diamonds.

Obsidian can be quite usefull... but hard to use. And you pretty much need a diamond pick to mine it.

I recommend one of two methods.
#1.1: Flood the surface of the lava so it all turns into obsidian, then mine it. 15 seconds per block with a diamond pick.
#1.2: Build your obsidian stuff very carefully so you don't have to re-mine it in excruciating slowness.

#2.1: Collect the lava blocks with buckets. It's best to have a lot of them. Like, full inventory of buckets.
#2.2: Build a wall around the area you want to build your obsidian structure as tall as you want it to be.
#2.3: Flood the entire enclosure to the top of the wall.
#2.4: Use the buckets of lava as if they were obsidian blocks, placing them underwater. They will instantly become obsidian where you place them allowing you to build your obsidian house underwater.
#2.5: Once finished, use blocks to destroy all the water springs at the topmost level of the flooded enclosure, thus draining it.
#2.6: Remove the floodwall and bask in the obscenely complicated glory of your near-indestructible obsidian house.

I like the second method better except for the part about building the retaining wall... I'll have to see if there's an easier way.

In order to improve the universe's frame rate, we must all throw rocks into volcanoes and then do absolutely nothing, worldwide, for a week, to take pressure off pathfinding.
or maybe throw them into the large hadron collider to atom-smash them instead.
Not to mention to throw all available animals into tiny pits.

Have you tested that?
Last I heard, obsidian doesn't drop itself when mined.

How old is that screenshot? I seen a LP around may, and it never flowed like that.

Edit: Also, thats one badass of a fort. Didn't know there was doors available to craft too.

He's talking about making cast-obsidian structures.

That screenshot is only a few days old, I think. More realistic flows were introduced last week, I believe.

Basically Notch had a break for a month and started fulltime Dev about a week or two since then.
The progress made is pretty amazing & A lot has been added. Including doors.

Evidently he's sold about 20,000 copies of the game.  That's a pretty hefty sum of cash at ~$12 a pop.   Takes me 3 years to make that amount of dough (well, not counting investments).

I think Notch mentioned that around half of that goes to the government for taxes or something. And he's already been working on the game for like a year. So its not all *that* much.
