Pro-microcline, gotta love that teal color. Only rock i'll use aboveground on glacier maps. I'd like to chime in with the rest of the people who state that orthoclase is the only stone they hate. Though alunite is a tad annoying on my beach forts.

Anyway, my chief area of interest right now involves casting the fortress proper out of obsidian, so random minerals don't won't bother me as much. Darn i need to get my df-capable computer back.  :'(

Alunite fits in nicely with most of my forts (light grey natural stone) and is the only thing I've used for altars to Armok. The blood shows up better on white. I find alunite very useful for religious stuff actually. blood shows up well on alunite to appease Armok. The colour is often associated with purity, making it good for more benevolent gods too. And white is the colour of bones, which is good for death gods. I'd say it ties with microcline for the position fo "most useful 'uselessite.'" Furthermore, alunite becomes even more useful with molten rocks because alunite is magma-proof in real life.

Yeah, that does get kinda annoying, but I'm used to it. My modding creates so many small clusters and veins that I get that message a lot.

Microcline.. mehh.. It's OK at best. Really the only one less attractive is Orthoclase.

In order to improve the universe's frame rate, we must all throw rocks into volcanoes and then do absolutely nothing, worldwide, for a week, to take pressure off pathfinding.
or maybe throw them into the large hadron collider to atom-smash them instead.
Not to mention to throw all available animals into tiny pits.

Oh I love olivine.  I think dark green furniture makes the fortress tasteful.

The platnium is the best part

Microcline saved my first fort. I owe it a great debt of gratitude!

Microcline wouldn't be so bad if it didn't appear in huge patches that always see to intersect with any area i need to look at often. Radiant yellow orthoclase is alot worse. Alunite gets modded out of my game with every version update because it keeps hogging all the space for valueable obsidian which also looks better.

Olivine is fine, i rarely see it because my forts are mostly near the surface and when i dig it up for my towers i find it having a very soothing color when combined with something brown.

In general, i like darker colors more because with a black background they are alot less stressful on my eyes then white, yellow and cyan.

A big blob of retina scorching microline right where you designated your meeting hall is, well, kinf of an eyesore. In multiple ways.

Rock like microline, orthoclase, alunite, etc. Do add some nice color to the game, but I would wish it wernt such huge and frequent blobs. I like kimberlite and olivine, but I dont think those occur anywhere else then in gabbro.

It gets a bit irritating when carving vertical mineshafts though, especialy when you have something improtant to do.

Its funny that there seems to be quite a bit of orthoclase hate. I feel like I don't hear as many complaints about that generally. I tend to agree though, that shade of yellow makes me want to take a melon baller to my eyes.

I never had a problem with olivine until my most recent fort. It was EVERYWHERE, and the occasional tsavorite or platinum clusters only barely make up for it.

Funnily enough, I find the orthoclase and microcline problems cancel each other out. The two colours look really good together, really!

I am against microline

it makes my fortress look ugly

I want uniform walls, where all kinds of color-deviations are planned and decorative, and not randomly strewn across the fortress so that half of my dinning halls suddenly has a different color

I built a tower out of microcline, and only microcline.

I think I even asked the traders to bring more so it could be complete.

I guess you could file me under 'pro'.

Opinions on alunite?

Rage, mostly.

I once had a very large (by my standards) basalt mine that was plagued with alunite.
