Where's the Lava?
« on: May 14, 2009, 05:02:10 pm »

I used the site finder and found a forested site with apparantly a lava pipe but I cannot find it. I've searched the first two levels and can't find the pipe! The next level is an aquifer and I don't know what to do? My dwarves are all stuck near the surface, eating turtle and living with furniture made of *gasp* wood. When we should be cooking orcs we're cowering from alligators. Help us!

Sometimes they just dont reach the surface.  It may be that it is just below the aquifer, or it starts on the same level as.  Try channeling around on the aquifer layer, seeing if you can find it.

There is no lava, only magma.

Magma is lava on the surface.

Magma is lava in lit areas.
The only thing that matters.

I modded Orcs in but for some reason a SIEGE OF CAVE CROCODILES showed up. I've been looking everywhere! I need stone and steel now! (and how did cave crocodiles become sapient?)

Amidst all this useful discussion of magma versus lava (lava is magma exposed to the surface), I'll tell you how to find it.

Divide your map into 48x48 squares. Dig a shaft down the center of each of these squares. It doesn't need to be very deep. You should find it in short order.

An even better way to look for it is to look for out of place obsidian on the forest floor. Dig a shaft in the center of that, and you'll find it.

That is what I said.  Surface, lit areas, there is currently no difference.

Sorry, missed the question in there. Focused on the croco-orcs.

Can there be an aquifer above the magma? Never seen it myself, but that doesn't define what's possible...

Magma pipes will sometimes penetrate aquifers, sometimes not.

Build a Trade depot, the hit D and look at the lowest Z level. You should see Most red Ds and a black rectangle. inside the rectangle should be your magma pipe. I've tried this to find HFS, it works...ish, it gives you a big area to search. Still, smaller then the whole map at least.

The fortress was annhialated by the crocs; they straight out bit us to death. I need some serious help. I installed the mod Warlord talks about on this page
http://www.bay12games.com/forum/index.php?topic=27424.0
Instead of orcs the plains are full of dark fortresses with crocs in them. I generated several new worlds, all with sentinent crocs. The crocs all have jobs, even weapon titles, although they are all completely clothesless and unarmed. Can anyone see what I might have done wrong? My only other mod was to make Demons playable in adventure mode.
