Yeah, I got killed on the first floor of the mines. There was a dwarf that was digging a hole tunnel, and I guess it had a dwarvish mattock because it killed me in one hit.

Hmm.  (Shrug)  I think Gnome Wizards are overpowered myself.  That's the only type I've ascended with.  Limited polypile as an intrinsic is just incredible.  Stacks of elven daggers, the magical cloaks and helms, some of the magical robes and gauntlets, ice boxes, bags of holding, magic whistles, infinite charges for the magical horns, infinite charges for magic markers and crystal balls, sheesh.  In one ascension, I ended up with 27 healthstones.

Also any vampire + early ring of sustenance (you can startscum fountains/sinks for one if you really want) is pretty absurd. You'll never run out of food, can beat a lot of things even without a weapon, intrinsic flight, intrinsic unbreathing, intrinsic drain resist... the benefits more than enough make up for the fact that you'll probably have to crown yourself to get some resists.

The monk's set of abilities in Slash'Em compliments the doppelganger race. Doppelgangers can't wield two weapons at once, but if you're a monk, you've got your fists (in Slash'Em, the monk's attacks are stronger than in the vanilla version), and you've got techniques. At level 30, grand master fists and pretty much high/max stats, you can chain blitz an arch-lich to death before it can get it's first move and curse you or summon nasties. Likewise, using chained blitz to chain Chi strike, and Pummel repeatedly, will put Vecna to near-death, if he didn't die from your fists already.

Also, the doppelgangers get intrinsic polymorph control at level 9, which is a boon when you plan to get top-tier pets like chasmes, dragons (if you're female) and other Slash'Em added demons. And poly'ing into a Giant Shoggoth kills just about anything non-acidic/acid immune and non-undead, including One-Eyed Sam.

If you are a neutral doppelganger-monk, The Eye of the Aethiopica is a must, provided you can spare a wish for that. Having a constant supply of mana for polymorphing makes survival in the dungeons a trivial matter. Spotted an archon far away from your position? Blast away with your disintegration breath as a black dragon! Having trouble with a minotaur? Eat it away as a Giant Shoggoth!

Yes, although it might not be the best use for a wish, since there are a lot of useful unaligned artifacts in this variant.

Playing again.  Just found a double-bones below minetown, one of them was a wizard.  Hell yeah.

Also got Firebrand as a sacrifice gift.  yiss

And the altar was coaligned so now all of his stuff is uncursed.

And he had a scroll of identify and a potion of water so now all of his stuff is identified.

Wait, what?  You're griping over a bones level because you didn't get quite as much loot as you thought?

Damn straight I am.

I mean yeah, I'm still thankful and it was still a huge haul.  There's still stuff down there I could probably take, I'm immune to poison so it's not like the spikes are a problem, but I am a little disappointed that it's not quite as awesome as I had hoped.

I was on it. It was THE GAME I was going to ascend on. I cleared out a whole room of Trolls and Dragons with my sword, I had been crowned and owned Fire Brand, the valkyrie hammer art, and Excalibur. I had almost every resist I needed...and a nice reverse geno scroll to use once I beat Medusa.

I dig down past Medusa's level, and fall down into a dead end of a maze. Ugh. Let me light thi--OH GOD ARCH-LICH CASTING TOUCH OF DEA--DYWYPI?
