Challenge: Computer Killer

This is basically my current fort :P
173 dwarves (30 kids however), 159 animals, 4x4 fort with magma, HFS, river, artificial 6 story waterfall,
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
, non-depleted biome.

On a laptop.

Getting around 40fps in normal play, probably less during seiges. Recently got a ~40 goblin seige
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
.

My secret is caging every single possible animal. I'm also
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
. FPS used to be higher but in order to provide defense I unleashed all 60 wardogs. It's not going to end well I think for me. I haven't butchred any pets.

Anyways my challenge is this

Reroute a major river through a mountain, inside which must be your fortress.

Too easy, especially with Magma.

You can burn wood, just not build with it.

So no beds either.

All soap challenge is better than all glass challenge; with magma all glass challenge is easy.

I've tried an all soap fortress before, make sure you either embark with a lot of cats or dogs for butchering if you want to get the fortress done before dwarves start dieing of old age.

Cats'd probably work better; lots of kitten soap.

Dogs would be better since they wouldn't become pets.

Depends on how quickly you butcher them, I've never had problems with kittens adopting dwarves. As soon as you get the birth message stick them in cages and mark them all for butchering. Helps that the cage happens to be in the same room as the chained breeders.

A dedicated skilled butcher seems to butcher the kitties faster than they can choose an owner.

Suspended Fortress or Castle in the Sky:

Suspended by only a thin bridge (1-3 width) extended a good distance from it's base, be it a peak, tower (natural or artificial), or the edge of a cliff; develop a fully functional fortress with a minimum height of 1 Z downward and 2 Zs upward.

Rules:
-Minimum distance from ground: 3 Zs (from bottom of the fort)
-You cannot start construction from the ground, must be built in/from the sky.
+However, if you need a chunk of land, be sure it cannot be connected to the ground in any way. It is advisable to start from an adequate chunk (like a peak) if attempting this, but must be disconnected by 3 Zs and 5 spaces horizontally from source, minimum.
-If you need a water/magma source for the interior, be creative, it cannot be directly linked (Falls are acceptable, bridged channels are not.)
-Only point of entry is the main access bridge.
-Only Support is the main access bridge.
-Self-Destruct Switch mandatory (Link to bridge).

Go wild with design ideas.

How would you go about generating a world with a large amount of Orc civs?

Copy the orc civ entry a couple times, just make sure you rename it.

Challenge: Computer Killer
Requirements:
  • Population Limit must be stupidly high (99999999 or something)
  • Invasions, temperature, and weather must be ON
  • You must not slaughter any tamed animals (Catsplosion :D)
  • NO purposeful killing of dwarves or tamed animals
  • 5x5, 6x6, 5x6, or 6x5 area
Everything else is up to you!
Good luck with having your computer, you know, NOT explode/catch on fire.

I like this idea. I've been playing Dwarf Fortress on some crazy 8 GB RAM, GeForce SLI beast. It was odd going from playing Fallout 3 on max settings to playing with ASCII graphics......seems like this would give my computer meaning. I just can't imagine what I would have all the dwarves do...perhaps dig out the entire world and then rebuild it? Also, why not on a 16x16 or whatever the max is?

Another idea:
Build a wooden arc one z-level above the map's river supported by a glass pillar, then dig out EVERYTHING underneath it.....mayor's name is Noah of course. Your survival will rely on cat meat. Wonder what would happen to sieges....

Copy the orc civ entry a couple times, just make sure you rename it.

I tried this, and didn't see any results. Do you mean copypastaing the entity or the creature doc; and renaming the creature name in the doc or the doc itself?
