It's putting a thought into her head.  She treats those thoughts as her own, and will be puzzled and confused if she thinks of a word or symbol that has no meaning in her memory.  Thoughts that just plain try to feed information into her head, (like saying "YOU ARE CHOSEN BY THE RAINBOW SNAIL AND WE ARE VOICES IN YOUR HEAD!!!1!") are screened out by unknown forces (though you can guess)

This cacophony wont do much good. There needs to be some way for Sophia to actually hold a conversation with players one at a time. There are a great many things I'd like to tell her, but shouting it all into the darkness like this simply wont accomplish anything.

The point is that you can't tell her anything.  Not yet.  She is oblivious of your presence, because certain forces are preventing you from giving away too much about her world.  You could try guiding her to enlightenment if you're patient enough.  But for now, she has someone else to talk to.  Hang in there, the light is coming!
