I like the world tree idea, but if you cut bits off, how would it regrow? Also, would it work like cutting into a mountain except you get wood instead of rock? Would the xylem and phloem tubes be big enough to make rope out of? Would other creatures live in the world trees? Would it be possible to strand yourself in them and never come down, or would bits fall off? would it experience the seasonal changes? would there be world tree saplings?

Rather than having them directly force you to mine adamantine, I would suggest that they give you strange moods that require adamantine. "Dig out the adamantine or Urist here goes insane and dies" is suitably vicious.

(It occurs to me that you can probably get "Lovecraft" as the random name of your fortress. That's when you know you're screwed.)

Elves, and other wyrd things? Perhaps they would consider the aerial wold their domain and your intrusion an invitation for death.

For world trees, we got some ideas... we may need more.

*Phloem and Xylem tubes being either ropes or... TUNNELS.

*Giant termites

*Elves

*Vikings

*Odineyes. (Odin got knowledge for an eye, and that was his LASER SHOOTING EYE! vreeeeeeoooooooooop KCRTCHOW!

Big, important trees are such a common theme in mythology that it's almost senseless NOT to include them in some fashion.

Abrahamic religion has at least two, Norse religion has one, the Mayans had one, etc.

Tree of Life and Tree of Knowledge don't ring a bell?

I mean, they're not quite the "huge tree" archetype, but they're still extremely IMPORTANT and divine/magical, and represent universal concepts.

Yeah, I think they manage to survive wildfires, possibly because they're sort of treated like constructions or possibly for some other reason.

It's because trees only catch fire if there's fire in their tile, and because there's a tee there, fire can't be there, so they don't catch fire. Thats how grass burns, don't cha know?
