Oh. Derp.

EDIT: STARTING NAO

Log of Vincent Riteinks, 14th Moonstone

Sorry, Journal. I haven't been able to write to you lately because... well... It seems I've been selected by the nobility for a "Special Duty". I, and Six other dwarves, have been selected to forge a new outpost.

Out in the middle of fucking nowhere.

I write this even as our caravan bounces over the rough terrain we're traveling. Did I mention this outpost is to be smack on the shore of an ocean?

The Least Waters?

The very ocean that is famous for claiming the life of whatever poor soul goes within a half-mile of?

Yeah, that ocean.

So, I, some random dwarf from the fortress guard, Have been sent to make a hellhole. Why, I can't fathom. Possibly becuase I refused to beat someone up for not producing clear glass when we quite obviously had no sand anywhere in sight, which was an incredibly unreasonable demand on the duke's part, mid you.

Then again, the nobility isn't exactly known for their reasonable demands...

Log of Vincent Riteinks, 7th opal

The Trader assigned to come (likely because she didn't make any sterling silver chains, even though she's done no metalsmithing in her life), had a tantrum today. She'd spotted some gems in the side of a cliff, and demanded them dug out. The miners said we didn't even have room. She took a pick herself, dug out the gems, and tossed our precuious wood out so she could cut the damn things.

I figured that she'd make some crafts later so she could at least encrust the crafts with gems for something worthwhile to sell. We sure as hell weren't about to mess with her or her gems. Gemcutters, I tell ya.

Log of Vincent Riteinks, 1st Granite

Well, we've arrived at the location for our lovely little slice of hell. I can smell the stench of rotting zombie-whale flesh from here, and there are doubtlessly skeletal sharks in the water, waiting to crawl onto land and drag us into the abyss.

Like hell I'll let that happen. Those nobles sent us here to die becuse they didn't want the bad publicity of an execution. So, we've decided we're going to live just to spite them.

Strike the earth!

Double post FTW

Log of Vincent Riteinks, 10th Granite

So we've dug down a fair bit. Four stories, I'd say.

Apparently, There's nothing but soil.

Four layers of soil. Peat on top, with silty sand next, then silty clay, then black sand.

I guess tis is a boon to the farming industry, but it just feels... wrong. It just feels off sleeping in sand intead of good, solid stone. But, from what the miners say, There should be a layer of stone soon. Four stories worth of soil should at least compress into sandstone or siltstone.

Log of Vincent Riteinks, 21st Granite

We've uncovered a silver lining to our stone situation. Or, should I say, conglomerate lining.

Digging closer to the sea yeilds precious stone. This may put a rhesus in the farming plans, but it gives us building material, at least.

But really, the most abundant resource right now is wood.

You heard me right.

There's a freaking forest on top of us. A forest. It contrasts nicely with the rocky shoreline, but we were told that the area was going to be barren grassland. That's why we brought wood for beds (that was kicked out so we could have gems).

Sounds like the bloody nobles didn't do the research, not that I'd want to scout out  place like this. Just makes it easier for us to survive, anyway.

Log of Vincent Inkrites, 5th Slate

The miner figure the can remedy the current shortage of stone by quarrying the beach. It might get in the way of future development, but we decided to go with it. We really needed stone, since we won't want to make everything out of wood. It'd be just too... Elven. I mean, We're already living in the dirt...

They said the Conglomerate seemed not to be all that pourous for some reason, so obtaining the stone is going to be easier then anticipated. They figure they might even be able to dig under the ocean and excavate the veins of ore and coal they can spot through the surf. I'm expecting them to botch it badly and end up hitting aquifer, killing them both. But then again, I'm rather cynical.

Life's kicking me in the butt, so I haven't had time to do anything. There'll be an update tomorrow though, I promise.

Double post for great justice!

Log of Vincent Riteinks, #` Slate (The date seems to have been smudged away...)

The miners started digging out the farms today. In a mixed blessing, they hit onyx, and later, stone.

This means two of the planned plots are ruined, but we salvaged one into a farm workshop, and the mechanic thinks he can make a mill out of the other one.

Log of Vincent Riteinks, 27th Slate

Exellent news! While the miners were digging out the future glassworks, they hit hematite! While our lack of a furnace or anvil is sobering in this situation, Iron is iron, and not to be taken for granted. We had a round of fine drinks this afternoon.

Log of Vincent Riteinks, 23rd Felsite

The miners exhausted the hematite vein. It was pretty big.

Our merchant says it'll leave an ugly scar on our otherwise geometrically perfect outpost. I say it gives the place character.

Log of Vincent Riteinks, 3rd Hematite

It only occurs to me now that though our entire spring here, not one zombie attack has occured. I decided to send out our huntress to find out where the zombies are.

Apparently, the only zombie here is a common skate, and all it does is sit at the bottom of the bay and "Drown". (I don't know how a zombie can drown, really.) Elsewhere in the sea, smaller fish happily swim about.

...

Huh. This whole "Haunted ocean" thing was way overblown.

Log of Vincent Riteinks, 12th Limestone

Nothing happened all summer. I mean, we fleshed out the Crafts floor a little, but nothing of note happened. Dog days of summer, indeed. However, something arrived to alleiviate the monotony today.

Hopefully, They'll be carrying an anvil with them so we can dispose of all our crafts. We're practically drowning in them.

Okay, in light of this news, and in light that it seems like nobody else besides me cares about this any more, it saddens me to  hereby declare Rainseeker's Succession to be a failure.  Thanks for trying everyone!  I'll start a new thread soon.
