I'd say "Firehuman" is a better name than fireman.

Then we could also have "firedwarves" and "fireelves" and "firegoblins" :P

we already have all of those if your map has access to magma.

I've never heard of a golem constructed from non-solid matter, and moreover this isn't D&D.

Fire golems have appeared in D&D and elsewhere, such as Diablo II.

I don't like "firehuman," because they're not humans.

Those seem more analogous to DF's magma men though.  Fire men seem more like miniature spirits of fire or something.

I was kind of defusing that earlier stuff. I still think of them as bieng golem-like since the raws say elemental_man for the Magmaman and Fireman. I know they aren't true golems, the magmaman isn't exactly solid either and I think Blizzardmen may be more akin to an Ice giant, just made out of solid ice. Mudmen aren't really solid either, but I guess could be closer to an elemental rather than a golem.

Of the elemental men, the Blizzardmen and Ironmen (very rare, I've only seen it once) are the closest to true golems. However, golems are generally thought as having no will and are basically robots in that they follow a command and cannot change that or change tactics or whatever. While the elemental men do have the no thought and no emotion tag, they don't really follow any set of rules (besides the program itself, but that is besides the point) and don't have some mage controlling them, other than Toady that is, lol.

Anyways, I just think logically that way and to me, they have the properties of golems. I know they aren't true golems and this isn't DnD, but we all have our opinions.

Also, for a sec I thought that maybe Fire Elemental for Firemen, but SoF are so much more a fire elemental than firemen.

Firemen do have a structure to them, so they have some sort of skeleton or frame, somehow....

Well then, a DF-invented name for "elemental"? Elder Scrolls had Atronachs. The dwarf word for "artificial man" is "berimudos". You can also just "fieryfy" an existing creature, making a "fire giant", "fire colossus", "fire titan", "fire demon", etc.

If we do want to get away from the -man suffix for those creatures, without turning them into golems, why not simply use -kin instead? Firekin, magmakin, ironkin... then again, Magic the Gathering did that as well (then then again, the "X did that" argument would make about anything questionable).

I know, call them "Ignis Sapiens" or "Fire Man".

Sounds fancy.

We could just say that the difference between fireman and SoF is like the difference between burning some coal and running a nuclear reaction.

I am sort of Glad I havn't spotted any modernisation of creatures and objects.

No I don't mean like calling the medical practitioners "Doctors"

I mean like calling Faeries something other then Fairy like "Raksha"... or calling Magic, Magik...

The three issues I see are three
-Elementals
-Men
-Golems

Though the distinction between Golem and everything else is rather simple. a golem is a mortal construct.

The difference between a man and elemental is usually affiliation and/or source.

What is the difference between a Fireman and Fire Elemental if there is any distinction?

Id make it a Toady question but I'd think a more approriate question would be: "Are Firemen, Fire elementals?" which isn't really nessisary to ask in my mind.

Also Shoku is really on the right track. The difference between a Fireman and Spirit of Fire is pretty wide. (I also believe a spirit of Fire is part skeleton?).

Well, the difference is like between the Morrowind Fire Atronachs and the Daggerfall Fire Atronachs. In the latter, they are big man-figures made of fire. In the former, they are scantily-clad lava-women. Fire Men are akin to lava golems, retaining a lot of physical structure - maybe even a skeleton wrapped in flames. Fire Elementals are completely fire-based, their only physical traits are usually fragments of stone or metal armor around their "chests".
