It's not so much their mandates that are a problem, because you're right that after a while, that amount of wood should just about suffice.  The problem is that they give you a mandate and you get nothing in return.

"You must not chop down more than 100 trees!"
"Or what?"
"Or we'll eventually stop bringing you fifty bins of rope reed cloth every year."
"You make a very compelling arguement.  I'll have Urist adjust the lever immediately."
"Do you mean 'ledger'?"
"No."

Anyone who likes elves for their bins of cloth has SERIOUSLY never put any effort into making a cloth industry.

I mean, serious, they bring you the LOWEST quality cloth in the game, bins and bins of it. Nothing worthwhile can be made with this cloth. They deserve to die because of how bad this cloth is. it must be so.

Well humans and dwarves only bring low quality stuff too...

EVERYONE HAS TO DIE! BWAHAHA!

Seriously, i don't see how that is at all an argument in favor of killing elves.

I just jack their stuff ( Depot Desecration! ), then they go to the OTHER Depot, but they are lost in the road ways.

Let's just say that it was the flooding/volcanic season...

Atleast The other civ's bring large amounts of useful things, and not just craploads of terrible cloth that you don't ask for. If they weren't so xenophobic and actually send a guild representative, then i'd be able to tell them not to bring any crappy cloth and cut straight to the point of bringing rare and exotic animals. But since they don't send a guild rep, lets get to the real point:

What are good reasons to not kill elves?

Let me count...

err... animals... on the off-chance they bring anything good.

and... give me a second....

Sorry, can't think of any more. DIE ELVES DIE!

wooden swords. Good sparring weapons. On the other hand you've generally got enough of those by year 3.

Firefuel. Bone bolts. Target practice. Sieges. Fun. Losing your fortress to dwarf-eating horrors.

Elves are digitized creatures that don't exist and they all behave the same way for this reason.  They are fair game for insults.  Darn dirty elves, making my computer filthy!

I think Bingbing wins here.

Reasons not to kill elves:

They'll take large numbers of low grade rock crafts and get them out of your way.  What more can you ask?

They kill and eat demons.  You've got to have at least a bit of respect for that.

You'd think so, but no.  I'd rather take them on myself.

But not nearly as many as they would if they used wagons.  And the fact that there isn't anything worth buying (and thus freeing up weight) means there's that much less that they can carry.
