This is an awesome Christmas present for many newcomers out there. Awesome job Captain'

Once you have finished the entire series, maybe you can throw it up as a download/torrent somewhere, so people can watch it offline and in native quality.

Hi there! Just registered up to say thank you Captain Duck. These videos have allowed me to play this brilliant game. I had read the guides on the wiki, but navigating the interface and graphics was just too bothersome to learn - once I saw it done, real-time, it became much clearer. Thanks!

Yeah the Tuts are awesome, I have actually been able to learn alot on my own after doing these guides as they give a good solid foundation knowledge of the game, dont get my wrong Im still learning but they have helped immensely and made me fully realise that a text game , if done correctly like DF is always going to exceed the depth of any graphical game.

I'm just checking back to see if there are any new guides up, but Im guessing C.Duck will be enjoying his new year :)

I cant wait to watch some of the new guides when they come, its just I have a glass industry setup, clothiers, forges and a whole host of other stuff. I currently have a baron, hammerer and tax collector and my residents are for the most part, happy! However with not having the game experiance I have done things in a somewhat disorganised way, this is because alot of new things are happening in game so I think next time around I will be better prepared but the guides would be useful.

Some future guide considerations:

Continuation of your defense setup
How to smelt and forge weapons
How to setup glass, collect sand
How to collect cave spider silk/functions of looms and clothiers
Optimum stock piles for the above
How to build towers (Outside)
How to use traps, mechanisms (Maybe how to make portcullis , which opens via an inside lever? and other cool traps stuff)
Defense capable of working against megabeasts
How to use gear assemblys and also how to use floodgates to flush water out a river
How to use pits

The above is just some ideas for future guides, much of it I have figured out thanks to the solid learning base I have through watching the guides. Whatever you come up with I will be happy with but one things for sure this game has mammoth scope! Anyway no doubt you have your own ideas but just thought I would post these and in actually in regards to the forges, its not to hard to  figure out their use after what the guides taught.

I just watched the video witht he trading---You are so right about the goddamn elves.  First time I got them I tried to trade a shield and the got insulted and left.  I laughed so hard during that video - Thanks!  ;D ;D

haha yeah the same thing happened to me :D

What I ended up doing was offering them some stuff to smooth relations, I did this a couple of times, then the third time I tried to do the same but it turned out there was some wood in one of my bins lol

On that note do elves take issue with wooden bins?

They sure do, thats why i selected all the stuff within the bins in the video. Goddamn elves.

Anyway im back home but have some guests over so no time for working on videos. Im way to drunk or stoned for that most of the time to anyway :). I think ill restart with making videos within the week though.

Oh and when i have some time im playing a lot of spelunky at the moment: http://www.indiegames.com/blog/2008/12/freeware_game_pick_spelunky_de.html , you guys might want to try that, its a pretty cool randomly generated platformer/roguelike

It's awesome to know that their is someone else that watches deceasedcrab's stuff here. I really like his dialogue Let's Plays with MadamLuna.

This is alittle off topic, but I started watching him, and saw his let's play civilization video.  This cause me to want to play civilization 2.  I decided to make the dwarven civilization and name the cities things that remind me of dwarf fortress such as former outposts and of course the motto (across three cities).  Later in the game I discover steel and it was the funniest thing reading "The Dwarven civilization has discovered the secrets of steel" at about 1700-1800 AD.  More on topic I'm trying something like this, but I don't think my laptops integrated audio and graphics cards are helping.  Neither is my shitty old mic.

Alright, its been a while. I've had a great christmas vacation, but thats over, and the last 3 days my internet was dead. Anyway ive finnaly made another video:

Part 15: In this episode ill explain forging, including how to create fuel, smelt ores and creating weapons. Also managing ore types with stockpiles.

Ill tell my whole video process for anyone who might be interested:

I record the videos using camtasia, and the screen size is 1280x400. Then using camtasia i subtitle it, and that adds a black bar to 1280x484. Im using a bar like that because its easier, and it helps with the aspect ratio which is quite fucked up. Thats how this tileset works. Anyway that gets exported as an avi using the camstudio codec which is great for exporting. That avi is around ~200mb big.

Then i use mediacoder to crop the resolution to 640x360. Thats the biggest format youtube can handle for normal user accounts i think. I then encode it as an MPEG4 in an AVI container, Two-Pass, 512kbps with LAME MP3 audio. This all drops the size to about ~30 mb.

That gets uploaded to youtube normally, using the site uploader. Then i wait a little while for it to process, then i wait a while for the HD version to come available. The link for this doesn't allways show up so i use the &fmt=18 command behind my url to force the high quality version if it's there.

And then its just time to post the links and wait for views & comments :). Anyway if anyone else wants to make videos like this check out http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3022910 . It has a ton of guides for getting started with this sort of stuff. And yeah i do LP's, i've lp'ed like 7 whole games and made a whole lot of different videos.

Nice Video-Tutorials but I noticed an error, in your fifth video at the very end you typed this:

This is a common myth, in the 3D version of the game cave-ins only occur when something is completely disconnected from the rest of the world. This false rumor comes from the 2D version of the game where cave-ins occurred when you made rooms bigger than 6x6 but this feature was removed with the introduction of the Z-Axis. So theoretically you could make a fortress that looks like this

and not have it collapse.

Also as far as I know all river fish are dangerous to dwarves, and rivers always have them. If you want water without the risk of your dwarves being pulled under you should embark on a brook next time, which are smaller, can be walked over, and are easy to find (they branch off rivers so you can just look near one of those), but they don't appear on the larger map screens on the embark menu (because otherwise the map would be too cluttered.)

Sorry if you already know this by now or if somebody else said it before me, I just don't like false information being perpetuated. :(

Edit: Found some more errors in Video #6 and #7

1. Bones (along with skulls and shells) do not cause miasma and are actually very useful (bones are best for making crossbow bolts, skulls can be made into totems and sold to caravans, and shells are absolutely vital for the occasional moody dwarf who may demand them), I always customize my refuse stockpiles so that the bones and such are stored underground (where they will not decay away into nothingness) and all other refuse is deposited outside.

2. If you value efficiency and productivity over (dwarven) friendships and social skills you may want to make a meeting zone (with {i}) instead of designating a meeting hall. Dwarves will throw parties at meeting halls (as well as statue gardens but not meeting zones) where they will stand around and talk to each. Parties can will prevent otherwise productive dwarves from working so you might want to prevent them from goofing off. On the other hand dwarves will make friends with each other (which will give them happy thoughts) and gain social skills (which will make them gain attributes like any other skill), but this has its own downside as dwarves will be very sad to see their friends die and vagrants who stand around doing nothing but talking to people may gain large attributes from social skills and make them dangerous to anger.

3. An easy way to remember which dwarves have which professions would be to customize their profession titles (in the same place as the name customization) to something like "Farmer/Brewer," and you can also use this to keep track of the skill level of the dwarves by naming them something like "SrFarmer/Brewmaster" or "JrMason/Engraver" or "JrFarmer/Processor."

4. A great idea is to customize food stockpiles to not contain seeds and make a separate seed stockpile next to your farms, this is because dwarves will grab one seed, carry it over to the farm, plant it, and then run all the way over to the food stockpile to grab another seed rather than grabbing a bagful or something. So putting the seeds close to the farms will allow them to plant seeds faster. Since your dwarves are eating plump helmets you may want to make your dining room closer to your seed stockpile so that your dwarves don't have to go very far to clean up all the seed leftovers. Efficiency is very important when your populace gets much bigger.

5. Barrels can be made of metal as well as wood (not that that would be useful outside of an extreme situation such as embarking on a treeless map.) Also you may want to reserve some barrels (which can be done on the stockpile screen) which will cause dwarves to leave a designated number of barrels to only be used for brewing or syrup processing tasks. This is useful because if you're not careful your dwarves may constantly fill all your barrels with food and thus prevent you from brewing any alcohol (which can be fatal on a map without an easily accessible source of water.)

6. In my experience dumping items is ludicrously high on the list of priorities, so much that when I want a large amount of stone dumped my entire fortress will drop what they're doing and go off to dump stones to the point of forgetting vital jobs such as making food, possibly leading to somebody starving. However, this may be because you are using an earlier version where I believe it was very slow indeed. Still, most players will be using the newest version and it would unfortunate if their dwarves became so preoccupied with dumping stones that they forget to grow any food or brew any alcohol.

I'll be watching the rest of your videos later, I hope to point out any errors or inefficiencies so that everyone can avoid common mistakes and make management of their fortresses easier. :)

Just wanted to say a massive thank you for this project. I learned the basics of dwarf fortress in a day with these, I don't even know if I could have learned it without the project. Thanks again.
