He can be. He comes with an army of slaves, and they can pack a punch, but along he is reasonable. You might see some friendly freed slaves around now.

Is Grinder extremely dangerous or something? I ran into him on D3 and barely beat him with the help of 2 imps. Then I leveled up twice (4-6).

Grinder is early game Sigmund now.

I believe you are referring to Pikel.

Yes, Grinder is the new Sigmund. I recommend that you just run fast, and never look back.

Oh yea, right you are. Well they are both fat, ugly imps that I hate.

Pikel's a kobold.

Or he was in .8 alpha and .7.

Hrm, need to read better.

Some interesting stats about which monsters in 0.8 killed the most people during the tournament that occured in may :
http://crawl11.dyndns.org/killers.html

Sigmund is always the unique with the most kills (857 characters killed, that roughly 50 characters killed by Sigmund by days) but Grinder follows him close (528 kills, roughly 31 characters killed by day).

I wonder if this summer tournament in 0.9 will see Sigmund reign challenged as the unique that kills the most character.

Last year tourney ( Crawl 0.7), Sigmund was already the character killer champion, but was followed by Crazy Yiuf, Grinder was far behind (as he was spawning lower in the dungeon in 0.7, so most characters were already dead or too powerfull before Grinder would have a chance to kill them)

Huh... I suck at Crawl, but I managed to kill Sigmund once. Or was it some sort of impostor?

Nope, he's a big kobold, so a bit tougher, like breadbocks said.

It's not that you can't kill Sigmund- it's just that he has a couple annoying abilities that new people have no way of defeating, and generally he'll take you out if you don't just run.

Nah, being able to take a few shots from him is also needed. I'd say about 30 HP should be enough to beat him without having to use an item. So about level 5, 3 or 4 with a bit of luck or certain character combos. Be and Wz come to mind as easily taking on Sigmund without needing items. Of course, one can always run and come back unless Siggy's close by. One time Sigmund wandered into a teleportation trap and literally appeared right next to me.

Hmm...I've never been a big fan of CCGs - I mean, I did and still do collect Pokemon cards, but I never got heavily into the battling and trading thing.

By definition that makes you a fan since you still buy them.

I lost my epic grinded level 12 (a lot for most of my characters) vampire wizard because I blew something up in the Orc Caves, and a measly warg got him. :'(

Nevertheless, his early game had a moment that springs to epic levels if we consider his later adventures. He was nearly undone by a snake's poison early on. With 1 hp left and the poisoning still in effect, I panicked and had him drink every bloody potion he had (yes, including the actual blood one). He became full, and started regenerating *just* a bit faster than the poison hurt him. Yeah!

Anyways, on the spellcasting types, I prefer wizards. When I play a vampire spellcaster, I tend to stick around at D1, D2 or D3 and dancing with the out-of-depth mobs generated. The best vampire conjurer raised this way got savaged by an ugly thing and a rock troll, because he lacked the means to blink away from between the two. Wizards just have that awesome spells - magic dart never misses (and with enough spamming can kill most monsters), call imp is a good way to kill mummies and lose monsters in corridors, mephitic is overpowered, blink+batform is a solid combination and conjure flame can be used to good effect for blocking passage or killing stupid/confused monsters. Repel missiles ain't no weakling either, especially if a centaur with strong arrows is spawned.

So far I only have four effective ways to kill Sigmund, or any powerful monster really.
1. Confuse them.
2. Summon a crap load of imps.
3. Confuse them and summon a crap load of imps.
4. Go berserk.

Although some race/class/god combo that used both 3 and 4 would be interesting.

Or use Ensorcelled Hibernation and stab him. Or just fight him with a powerful melee character. Or use needles. Or poison him. Or use other decent conjurations. Or summon other things, or raise things from the dead. Or probably a bunch of other things.
