I thought almost all portals were timed?

The treasure vault isn't. But I've already found that. The question isn't whether the portal is timed, it's whether there is a portal. Or just a vault.

I vaguely remember seeing a largeish square of green crystal and usually an altar at one corner (which is, I think, in front of a secret door). However, I think it was populated by crystal golems (and maybe some iron) and not just iron golems. If your thing is the same thing, there is no portal.

So I entered, and there were a crap done of irpon golems (who are surprisingly squishy) as well as a nice artifact +8 AC ring. After completing that confidence booster, I went and finished off the swamp in less than 30 min, making this my second character to ever see two runes. Now I need to decide if I want to try and clear the vestibule for the horn to unlock the treasure trove or clear elf next.

I just ran into nessus, I didn't have a scorpion army out at the time so I teleported away, the jerk managed to hit me once though, which hurt alot since his arrows do fire damage. I just recovered and its time to make him regret it with a dozen giant scorpions stings on his face.

I also found enchanted learther armor and a short sword of protection, I have 16 AC and 17 EV now :D

Woah, you have a treasure trove that's asking for Geryon's horn?

I believe Troves were changed to sometimes ask for misc items. This can include runes, by the way. They don't take them, they just want you to get the item in question.

@Bishop: Those are a new kind of vault with a fixedart (Ring of Robustness), design (metal walls), and enemies (iron golems). There's a few others. There's one with the Scythe of Curses and a bunch of reapers and I think curse skulls, for instance.

Hmm...I've never been a big fan of CCGs - I mean, I did and still do collect Pokemon cards, but I never got heavily into the battling and trading thing.

By definition that makes you a fan since you still buy them.

Did swamp, got the annoying undead vault. At first I balked at the idea of completing it right now, thinking maybe I'll come back if I get a couple scrolls of blinking or a source of teleport control, or maybe mem apportation. Something to skip the pestilence. But then I remembered, from all my nuking around with freezing clouds, that clouds don't spawn in tiles which already have a cloud, so...

I started filling the corridor with mephetic cloud. I had clarity and poison resistance both so it wouldn't affect me. I shoot a square or two in front of me, move a few steps, shoot another square ahead (or my own square and hope some miasma would clear nearby), and step forward. Cleared the corridor and got the rune without taking a single tick of miasma/rot/slow/etc.

I'm quite pleased with myself, this felt like a rather ingenious solution.

So I finally got a chance to try out Leda's Liquefication in Trunk, and I can't seem to figure out the point of this spell. It affects the caster's square, it shuts off if you're not on the ground, and I think it's not counted as water for purposes of swimming checks. So what's the point? It doesn't help you escape, deal more damage, or defend against damage. So why bother casting it? Does anybody know? I frankly can't figure out the point of the spell.

Do Merfolk transform under its effects? Do swimmers get speed bonuses? If so, at the very least Merfolk and Ice Form users can abuse it, which is ok. But it still seems odd that you can't use it in Spider Form while clinging. You're still touching the ground, so the flavor makes no sense whatsoever. It also seems fine from a power-level PoV since you're using a level 4 and level 3 spell to slow down nearby non-fliers. That combo would be good, but not broken or at least not more broken than curare since it would have the same effect but to any target in LoS.

Damn.
I wan't my MdFi to get as far as possible.
What's the best possible god for that?

Okawaru - Can yield nice gifts, but his combat abilities only work great in corridors.
Nemelex - Cards have great utility and take care of backup/escape/ranged issues.
Makhleb - Takes care of backup/ranged issues.

You should check the learndb about this kind of stuff.

Quote
Generates a halo of "liquefied" ground around the caster. Moving on liquefied ground has a -3 player movement malus (slightly more than one item of ponderousness). Applies slow effect to monsters. Doesn't affect flying, clinging, insubstantials; cannot be cast by these.

It slows the monsters in its range and makes it more difficult for you to move in it. So basically, everything gets slowed, but your slow effect only applies to movement and probably isn't as bad.

It's like a really cheapass version of Haste for casters, more or less.

I guess the point is to make monsters take more time to get to you, giving you more turns to hurl magic at them before they get into melee range. So, yeah. A really cheapass version of Haste.

Which version are you using? if you're in the trunk I would say NOT okawaru. I have a soft spot of Makhelb because spamming demons is a great way of getting tons of creatures off of you.

I just finished the lair and orc, heading to the swamp now. I can learn spells from the book of demonology but I'm afraid of picking up summon greater demon and ending up sliced by a hostile executioner.

Also, were are the elven halls in trunk?

It's not in Orc anymore ? I don't find in the commit list a mention of moving Elven Halls elsewhere.
Last time i cleared Orc in a 0.8xx it was always there too.

Have you explored fully the branch, sometime there are some stairs leading to closed part of it, maybe it's in there in your game.

On my current game i have a promising Deep Elf Air Elementalist following Sif Muna for the avalanche of books.
I found a demon wip that i use as self defense in case i can't cast anymore, it's got the double of damage of a normal wip and the one i use has some nice bonus in accuracy and damage thanks to some scrolls.

But i would like to brand it as i found earlier a vorpal scroll.
Ideally as fighting in melee for such a character is a "last ressort" method, my goal would be to get it a distorsion brand, but is Sif Muna able to grant books that feature a Warp weapon spell ?

I don't think you can vorporalize a distortion brand.
