It was Archer, IIRC, but yes.

So Prisma Ilya is more than Team Lube Monkey bait? Hmm. Maybe I'll give it a try after I finally finish season 2 of Code Geass (watched Season 1 years ago and dropped it, apparently before things got interesting).

Made in Abyss is a strange bird.

I'm torn between saying it's much more than it seems and that it's much less so.

Anyone seen Kakegurui?

Holy shit thats some weird ass stuff.
Premise is that the characters are in a university where the richest of the rich go...and the main activity after classes is gambling. Now because everyone is rich as fuck, money becomes less of an issue when gambling and so they start gambling for all kinds of different stuff. This becomes especially true when a new girl arrives at the academy a compulsive gambler which absolutely gets off on the idea.

And so they gamble for all kinds of stuff in this show: pokering for finger nails, idol contest for partaking in hardcore porn and prostitution, russian roulette with 3-6 bullets (in a six shot revolver) while simultaneously playing psychic card games (yes its as weird as it sounds), betting ever progressively worse things like life plans, indentured servitudes and the already above mentioned completely fucked up adhesive contract about hardcore porn.

The show has become a morbid fascination, as you watch the people go down pretty far in the spiralling madness of gambling. If you ever felt compelled to gamble watch that show...you will reconsider.

Art-Style is great and the soundtrack is sweet as hell. And jeez are the characters except for the rather plain Male sidekick completely fucked up. You also learn a lot about gambling, how professional gamblers work and lots and lots of cheating.

So if you want to watch something that fills you with sick fascination definetly watch this, its worth it.

I had heard that it represented gambling pretty badly overall and avoided it for that reason, maybe I'll give it a shot now.

Has anyone seen or more importantly read Alien 9? If so could someone please tell me what the point of having the girls trained extensively for non-lethal combat was if in the sexual manga their expected to massacre even minor threats? Is it some sort of social commentary that's too subtle for me to grasp? Like about how expectations of adulthood and how it's presented to childrenis often drastically diffrent from how they think of it?
I mean with the moral standards the show has set up, would it be seen as okay for the girls to murder their teacher, who was okay with emotional manipulation, traumatizing them and essentially killing their pets just to "test" them, I mean she's as much of an alien as they are...

Is the whole thing supposed to be a metaphor for how ethics are applied inconsistently when people of different cultures meet? ???

I watched one episode of Kakegurui, and I badly disliked it. I tried it out because I've always liked gambling animes, but as a gambling anime it is simply inferior to existing shows like Kaiji or Legendary Gambler Tetsuya. The show makes no effort to try to make it's characters believable, they're all hyperbolic caricatures. Moreover, the draw of the art style emphasizes those creepy-ass-fucking smiles, which I guess is supposed to be similar to 'ahegao' which something that is present in pornographic doujins, so I suppose it's meant to specifically target the weird fetish crowd of the anime community... for me though, it just makes people look ugly and bizarre, and pulls me out of the show.

I actually hated the one episode I watched so much I had to re-watch Akagi from start to finish (for the third time now) just to get the taste of it out of my mouth.

This is what I mean though:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

If the first episode was any indication, I assume that faces like that would be popping up throughout the entire series, and it was my impression that that was the actual draw of the show, not the gambling, but the enormously exaggerated faces.

I always have it in my mind as "Titan-face."

Also, fetishes aren't meant to be understood, only to arouse.

Okay I might have overreacted to the Kakegurui thing, just something about it seemed really off to me.

Watching the latest ep of Boku No Hero Academia, god I just love the dozens and dozens of characters in this show. Cast size versus individual character memorability is extremely good in this show. Moreover, despite that, pretty much every single episode they reintroduce characters, with a special cut giving both name and quirk name and powers. I thought that was really redundant at first, but it's coming off as another 'quirk' of the show that I'm liking.

I want a Light Yagami-type character in the show, one who is fascinated by how the powers work and exactly what all the rules governing each one are, and trying to game the quirk system based on research.

I'd say the reintroduction thing is nice for a show with a large cast.

Usually, I'd forget who someone is and not really want to google it or look back.

Yeah, this.  Even within fetishes different people will draw different lines to what's gross and what's hot.  Its just some weird brain wiring thing.

The best explanation I've heard for fetishes is that its what happens when a kid sees something unexpectedly sexual and a new connection is made.  Hence we have the Disney Robin Hood movie to blame for a bunch of furries, and in ~10 years we'll probably have Tangled to blame for a wave of people into bondage.
The same director is going on to make this:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
And Disney also made another furry movie recently.  Maybe this is part of Disney's business model; give kids fetishes so you can sell them a second movie ticket as adults.  Playing the extreme long game.

I'm not sure I buy that particular explanation, because the mechanism seems suspiciously loose. Not everyone who sees Foxin Hood becomes a furry, and not every furry saw Foxin Hood as a kid. Even if there's a correlation, there seems to be a lot of interference from elsewhere.

It's also the same story as... well, pretty much everything else. Genre preferences, favorite characters, that one thing that horrified you as a kid. Everyone's got stuff they can point to and say "that was the first time I noticed X, so maybe that's what caused it," but it's all different stuff, even from people who've seen the same things.

There are many many many other anthropomorphic media from the 80s-90s out there.  Disney doesn't have the exclusive and it ain't any 'one' show of theirs either.

... Why are we talking about this anyways?

I'm not 100% on it either, but I do feel that it can't be pure genetics.  I get that genes are complicated and interact with each other and the environment, but.  There's no way the human genome is detailed enough to code for "balloons being inflated" or "the cars from Cars" (actual fetish, I'm so sorry I know and I'm so sorry I told you).

The best defense I would offer of the theory is that its all about having your first moment of "what is this feeling?" at a strange time.  There are a few common threads among fetishes, like things getting put into things.  Example, one poor sap wrote to Dan Savages' sex advice column about the fact that he had a scuba gear fetish and no one else on the internet seemed to, and the reply he got was "that sucks, you probably saw someone attractive putting on scuba gear".  Also why feet could be such a common fetish, since people take their feet in and out of shoes/socks so often even in public.  Other treads: power exchange (hence most of BDSM), and cartoon characters that are clearly in a different category from humans, but human enough.  To paraphrase the creator of Gravity Falls: "when you're going through all the unexpected changes of puberty, anything with confidence can be attractive.  Even a triangle."

Edit: I mean, we're talking about anime.  Considering the current state of the market, its not an entirely irrelevant conversation.  Still a derail, but its like the train was derailed onto another, paralleled track.
