No those things are definitely counted as sales. e.g. a few weeks ago "Triage X" manga (an extremely perverted one by the guy behind Highschool of the Dead) appeared on the top 50 sales chart for Japan, hitting #24 in sales. But I had to scroll back several weeks worth of sales logs to find even a single well-known ecchi or harem series that even got in the top 50. So occasionally one of these series blips into the top 50, but often you won't see a single one appearing for weeks on end.

Meanwhile ecchi/harem mangas are a fairly big deal in America in terms of sales. Here's last years weekly best-sellers:

Note that Akame ga Kill!, Monster Musume and No Game No Life mangas were the chart toppers in America several weeks of last year. And most of us probably know what those things are like. This type of content isn't so underground that it wouldn't be recorded on the sales charts in Japan, but generally, these series don't break the top 50 of each week, unlike the 'states where they're chart-topping.

Normally a parody doesn't actually surprise you when you're like "ah, she's gonna do some boobie mesmerizing shit now" and BLAM: Titty Hypnosis pops up on the subs, and it isn't the subbers having fun, it's literally full of shit like that and it's a hoot because of it.

Monsume goes in with a bunch of the "whoops, my top slid off!" stuff but it's fun because they take the extra step of nerding out over physiological quirks and whatnot well beyond the point of trying justify shit.

I've only seen AgK when it came on adult swim I think, and I know nothing except it bored the shit out of me. Never even heard of NGNL.

Keijo's not in a much different category to Strike Witches or something like that, I'd think. Strike Witches also worked because they took the core concept seriously. Anime can be good at that: taking an absolutely batshit crazy idea then running with it as if it's a serious idea. That's kind of what sets this sort of thing apart from how American or British would do it. In the west if you have a crazy idea, then they want to make it "Zany" on top of that. But it works far better if you just roll with it.

I'm surprised you never heard of No Game No Life btw, it was a pretty big deal when it came out, got a lot of discussion here. It has reasons to love it and reasons to hate it, which makes it something worth talking about.

But you might just not be up on the whole titty-powers genre. There is in fact a genre. Keijo is a middling fun series, but it's just not anything revolutionary and certainly isn't overthrowing any tropes. It's parodying sports animes, not fanservice animes. It has special "titty power moves" because every character in high-powered sports series comes with signature moves. e.g. Kuroko's basketball and all of the named basketball-playing powers that different characters have.

That's what Keijo is parodying, "powers" based sports series, but with hot girls and the powers are lewd. It's part of a trend "parody <thing X> but with hot girls". e.g. Walkure Romanze which is "hot girls and jousting" or Saki, which is "hot girls and mahjong". Recently we had Bakuon, about "hot girls and motorbikes". And the guy who directed Keijo also worked on Upotte - it's about sexy machine gun girls (the girls are anthropomorphic machine guns), which itself was influenced by the whole mecha-musume anthropomorphism thing of Strike Witches, Kancolle etc. Then of course there's Daimidaler from a couple of years ago. it's about a guy who powers up a mega-robot's core by fondling boobs. That's his power. think Shinji from NGE but he has a molester power.

And the cake is still taken by Seikon no Qwaser ... the story about magical battlers who get the powerups from virgin's breast milk (direct from the tap, so to speak. YMMV). Is that "playing it straight", "subverting it" or "running with it at full speed". The answer: all of the above. it's (1) actual fanservice, (2) subverting the idea - the boobies are a major plot point (3) far more over the top than Keijo ever dreamt of becoming.

There are an endless stream of such shows parodying every possible other genre and activity.

So I've watched through the entire first season and the half of the second one of Konosuba, and I can definitely say that it doesn't stop being fanservice-y. In fact, it feels like the majority of the jokes are set up over sexual innuendo. Definitely worthy of being called a "harem", even if not technically right.

Dungeon Meshi could get a show, but given what little I know about it (each chapter is a standalone recipe / gags), you're looking at a short episode show for that. Don't be surprised if they air it before long, but it's in one of the 3, 4 or 8 minute formats.

Dungeon Meshi and Vinland Saga seem unlikely, to me, because they're both low fantasy with relaxed pacing. That's something that's popular mostly among older folks, but they both also have fights, which means a certain degree of funding is necessary to get the quality to a level that people will accept. See Berserk for a case where this failed. And Grimgar notwithstanding, there's not a lot of anime that combines these tones well in the first place, so I'm hesitant to suppose that any animation made of either of these would actually be very good. As for Goblin Slayer, those limitations don't really apply; it's gritty low fantasy compared to a lot of Japanese franchises but not really in ways that would make adaptation difficult. If its current popularity trends continue, I would expect to see an anime announced in the next eighteen months. Can't say anything about Death Do Us Part as I've not read it.

I don't really agree with that description. Each chapter has a recipe in it, but that's only like a fifth of the chapter, there's also plot progression, interparty banter/pratfalls, and about twice as much worldbuilding and ecology as any of those other things. They're not going to do one chapter per episode, because they'd want to finish the volume and have a decent finale. There are chapters you can cut, of course, but it's still a 30-chapter book and each page is pretty dense. Twelve minutes might be doable, but eight wouldn't work so I think it's more likely that they'd go full 22 minute and just rush through with episodes blended together and cut bits out all over the place where it's not super relevant to the plot or to character development. Which wouldn't be great, honestly, but it would be doable. Twelve minute 2cour might actually be ideal but I just can't see that happening.

UDDUP is like, modern but people have access to monomolecular blade coatings, wearable sonar sensors that look like glasses and are linked to your optic nerve, minor psychic type stuff, high end human to actual superhuman characters, very stylish and flashy battles, and like 200+ chapters. So basically Gangsta except the blonde guy is a 13 year old girl, and the tech level is higher.

As for Keijo!!! I meant that usually even a parody usually has a bit of a wink-to-the-audience in it, but a setting where girls assbashing each other off of floats (which does happen irl) isn't just a kitschy tv show concept but an actual national pastime where parents are proud of their daughter and don't even bat an eye over telling someone that "she's a master of the hurricane ass crusher technique" and so forth. Not even disguising it as just "hurricane crusher" or "category 5" or something, no, they make goddamn sure that people know it's a "category 5 titty surge" or something.

The pacing of Vinland Saga in the initial "hook you" stretch is better than Kyojin, and as much as I enjoy the later world-building chapters of SnK in hindsight they are so fucking slow. People already know who Leif Erikson was, people know what vikings are, heck I bet a lot of people would recognize the name Canute.

"ludicrous thing is a national sport" is actually a pretty common setup for anime. And the "named attacks, but with idiotic names" is a very old trope, parodying named attacks for at least the last 25 years.
