... getting? Implication I've ended up with watching folks talking about SAO is that the only good things about it is abridged and the fanfiction :P

SAO has one really good selling point:

I actually quite enjoyed the first chunk of season 1 (once I realized that it was actually a love story with a twist, and not a fantasy shonen combat-show), and the first chunk of season 2. It's their decision to keep trying to (badly) cram whole other books into the last handful of episodes that bugs me.

It would be brutally difficult and probably won't work. In other words, it's absolutely dwarven!

I second almost every word of this, except the SAO2 stuff as I haven't yet continued past SAO. But I know from reading reviews this seems to be the general opinion of SOA.

Yep. That first part would actually have been pretty good if Kirito had been less of a Stu and it had just diverged at around the point where Asuna and Kirito adopted Yui and spent a couple seasons of drama and such in SAO, perhaps with changing conditions within the game.

Alternatively, do what that one good fanfiction did and set the original story in the world of ALO, which in many respects is a better setting since the nature of it encourages inter-player violence to anyone who doesn't think carefully about the implications of the World Tree and infinite flight.

I only bothered to watch the first season of SAO and I really didn't like the jumpy pace of it and the waste of the initial setting

I second to 1000th this comment too!
It took me four tries of watching the first arc's four episodes to really get what had been going on.
The allure SAO has?
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
but the jumps, oh those jumps, yikes.
I'd say I still prefer .hack// for any kind of Anime-about-X-player-trapped-in-Y-MMO.

Though I'd really like to see an anime about an MMO where the characters are not trapped in the game.

It's not an anime, but Legendary Moonlight Sculptor is what you're looking for. IIRC there are translations of it out there.

DOES NOBODY IN THIS ******* SHOW STAY DEAD
It doesn't surprise me in the least. Troll ending and they hadn't finished milking even 10% of the drama potential. I was expecting that very thing.

And so grows the list of anime series where people don't die when they are killed, surprising absolutely no one.

The only one I can state that wouldn't be a spoiler is Bleach.

The sheer number of times that show treats someone as dead... and they turned out to be BARELY injured (from their life threatening injuries)... is astounding.

Why isn't it a spoiler to mention Bleach? because Bleach doesn't like to admit it does that.

Damn. I was hoping they'd be able to take this in an interesting direction. Ah well, I've still got Psycho-Pass to keep me entertained, so at least one of the Butcher's works is working out.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.
