The anime version went off the air for 1 year, then came back in 2014. The first run is eps 1-175 and the "sequel" are all the new eps since it came back.

Slaine shot first again, but this time he got the kill. Inaho's smile made me feel like he understood the irony of it all, and with asseylum dead i don't think he cared enough not to take advantage of the situation. Some sense of humor and pride, getting himself shot in the head. Probably the most fun i've had watching a single character, pretty sad he won't be in the second season.

I know a lot of people didn't really get inaho's character, but they were just really playing the long game with his personality. He's been suppressing his emotions very well, to a point of severity, to try to increase his chances of success, and while they'd shown here and there before, they got him killed in the end.

I fucking loved Inahos character.  He was cool, collected, and badass.  So many protagonists in shows are all screaming about manliness and shit, but he actually seemed dangerous.  He reminded me of the Civ games, when those knights would take out a tank.  It always bothered me, but now I get it.  A fucker like Inaho was leading the charge.

Just binged through all 12 episodes this weekend.

They telegraphed for ages that something bad would happen but I was not ready. Drinking some sake to Asylum's memory tonight. I'm not sure I like the trend of shows following the Game of Thrones (red wedding flashbacks) / Walking Dead template of building up characters just enough that it'll impact the viewer when you kill them off.

I might have missed something because it doesn't quite make sense: why was Slaine so focused on protecting the count in the last episode? He knew full well he intended to kill off the princess at first sight.

At least Inko still lives, got to count your blessings. She reminds me of Petra in AoT who they nonchalantly squished up around a tree. I liked Petra.

From my viewing of it, I think it was out of shock from what had happened with the Vers soldier earlier in the episode. Slaine has realized at this point that neither side is working with his interests, and has been caught between two worlds throughout the show. The incident with Inaho at the island meant that he had already categorized "Orange" as definitely an enemy with his, and while the Count was also not his ally he had at the least treated him with honor and such. If the count died and the castle fell then Slaine wouldn't really have anywhere to go after that. Not to mention this whole time he's been running on pure emotion in contrast to Inaho's logic.

I kinda wonder about the princess's death. Even though they've faked it out twice already something seems off. For the show to continue one of the two headshottees surviving would a pretty efficient way of adding more drama and conflict and also force Slaine to live recognize how badly he's messed up, and the fact that the monologue at the end says her whereabouts were unknown seems a bit weird since they had the Deucalion's aldnoah drive to tell if she was alive, unless the crash shut it down.

Funny thing, even though I have some weird commitment problem and can never finish any series I watch and have almost no idea what you are talking about, but

there have actually been a few incidents of real people surviving point blank head shots, at a rate of almost 10% (plus a guy who apparently survived 10 point blank head shots and survived), so if Inaho was shot with a normal gun, plus this series fascination on logic, he has a good chance of coming back. 

That relies on a few things I don't know yet though.

To be honest I'm kinda hoping that he dies and the princess lives. The cinematography does seem to make thid more likely. Even though the princess not dying has happened way too often, having Inaho die provides more oppertunity for the story to develop in interesting ways.

There was that little comment at the very end about the princess' location being unknown after the battle.

On the other hand there was also an indication that Slaine can activate aldnoah drives, which would make him the plot device of season 2. And he's already at Gaius Baltar levels of dislikable.

Finally got around to starting Gunbuster 2. First episode: not at all what I was expecting, I need a minute to digest what I just saw. This is a "sequel in name only" if there ever was one. Gunbuster was a bit cheesy but it was basically a pretty realistic mecha show. I just checked and Gunbuster 2 is directed by the same guy as FLCL, and has the sort of manic action and lunacy you see in stuff by Gainax (and ex-Gainax) folks, like FLCL, Gurren Lagann and Kill La Kill. It could be good, but it's the complete opposite of what I was expecting from Gunbuster 1. The only issue I have is sticking on the Gunbuster name, which seems to be purely for marketing purposes. Just make it a standalone series if the concept is so different, and don't ruin an existing franchise from ever getting a proper sequel.

Gunbuster 2 stuff

Actually, a friend of mine just started getting into Gunbuster and Diebuster, and said he couldn't stand the original and dropped it but liked Diebuster a good bit. Maybe it's just a case of YMMV, despite the major differences between them?

I'm not saying either is good or bad. Just it's like tacking on a franchise name onto something that's the complete opposite of the original. The first one is hard sci-fi. The second one has topless girls kung-fu kicking giant aliens apart while in space without a space suit.

Gritty hard sci-fi and topless magical space girls both have their place - just not in the same continuity. Once a franchise has topless girls using magical space kicks to destroy huge aliens, it's really had to shift that back to serious science fiction.

One thing I will say is that the Gunbuster 2 genre of overpowered semi-naked magical schoolgirls who can destroy aliens and/or robots with a single kick is WAY overdone, and the Gunbuster 1 genre of actual sci-fi with realistic physics (and needing oxygen in outer space) is pretty sparse. So I would have prefered Gunbuster 2 to be more like the latter.
