Not that they're bad, per se, and the second OP is definitely an improvement t'my ears, but...

It's all the other bits. Like blindy's theme, especially after it shifted. The mother's vocal theme bits. All the other short bits and one offs and longer stuff and just etc., so forth, and so on. There's violins and I swear I heard bagpipes at one point and just all sorts of wonderful junk like that. S'great ♪
I have to agree about the sound quality in the show. I was just listening to some episodes in the background (with the video in another window), and its quite honestly amazing, especially when compared to the usual sound quality in shows. I think that its one of the things that gives the show so much atmosphere.
I do disagree about the second OP though, personally I love it to death.

Episode 23 was nice, yes.
