just clearing movies out of my backlog before I have to go to classes in February. So far:

- The Wings of Honneamise: Wow, that was a really unique sci-fi film. More introspective than I expected. 9/10
- Children who chase lost voices: was pretty good, 8/10
- The Wolf Children: Ame and Yuki: was as awesome as hoped, 10/10
- Summer Wars. Very well made, great characters, but I felt the two different themes in the film didn't gel together, but still 7/10

Last and definitely least, I've had this movie d/l'd for quite a while and finished this just 10 minutes ago:

- Escaflowne: A girl in Gaea I want 90 minutes of my life back! Exactly how NOT to adapt a 26 episode series to a movie! It was horrible. 3/10

Yes.  I found the Escaflowne movie worse than the TV series.

The Wings of Honneamise was also really good.

I liked the Escaflowne TV series well enough. Well, except the ending. That kinda sucked.

Oh, and the "lucky blood" thing. And that one part where the villains played matchmaker and got the heroine hooked up with the lancer dude; that was utterly absurd.

Okay it had problems, but wasn't that bad.

and this is why I don't like two best friends. I've seen positive reviews of the game from multiple other sources, so bleh. And besides it got a bunch of patches in the months afterwards that improved the game a ton.

Intelligent titans were a perfectly well-developed plot device, I agree. They dropped hints in Episode 1, and pretty much outright said it during the opening of Trost. Being biomechas, specifically, was kind out of left field. I expected that the Titans were gradually developing intelligence as one type of aberration, and Eren's father had worked out a Super Soldier Serum kind of deal.

I don't think that would have made any sense.  If it had been presented as "The titans got stronger and stronger until one day they overwhelmed us" then I could buy a gradual development theory (although that would be a completely different series).  But is it remotely plausible that two different titans would mutate and go from virtually zero to near-human intelligence and gain other abilities (gigantism, armour, the ability to appear and disappear at will) at the exact same time?  The opening episode strongly suggested that some kind of intelligence must have started controlling the titans, at the very least.

And indeed, in the manga this is made far more explicit, with the (extremely) intelligent Beast Titan and Eren's latest stunt, both of which are capable of commanding Titans.

The thing is, they've established that aberrant titans are a thing that happens. They've also established that even regular titans can learn (the tree-climbing thing, for instance), although that happened fairly late. I'm not really prepared to argue about the statistical likelihood of multiple titans developing multiple superpowers - when it comes down to whether something like this is likely or not, it's about Plot. It wouldn't have ruined my suspension of disbelief, at any rate, and there are alternative potential explanations if that's too much. One titan is intelligent and manipulates other aberrants with more directly relevant abilities, which otherwise would never have wandered their ways to the Wall all in such a short time span or with such coordination, for example. I agree that intelligence controlling the whole thing is necessary, it just doesn't seem necessary that it be specifically that humans can assume the forms of titans with special powers. And having that as the explanation undermines some of what I expected from the early episodes, which was a grimdark but nevertheless Humanity Fuck Yeah story. All that stuff about humanity's counterattack has gotten lost under piles of I-don't-even-know-what.

I'll admit, though, that I wouldn't have had too many complaints of only Eren could do it. It'd seem like a subversion of foreshadowing, and so a little disappointing in that light, but that's still a perfectly good way to keep things fresh for your audience, and I'd get over it pretty quick. It's just that having the number of shifters proliferate creates a superpowers escalation that I don't really tend to like, although AoT has handled it well enough as far as those things go, in that transforming isn't an automatic solution to every problem for anyone, and Eren is clearly not the most threatening hero. It still creates a problem, though, where it seems like the only way to challenge the heroes is to introduce a new threat with new superpowers every time they overcome the last one, and makes it really easy to leave behind the characters who don't have the new-superpower-granting plot device (transforming, in this case).

I also liked the TV version. That's why this movie version was doubly painful. It was a complete alternate retelling of the story, which could have been a cool introduction into the series, but just no... Not only did it do a terrible job of telling a story in general, it also demolished everything good about the series.
