It is sort of why I sort of sigh whenever someone just flat out denounces anime.

I mean I know I have said some pretty blanketing things about Western cartoons and their lack of a few qualities... but all it took was a few examples before I went "Ohh yeah".

There are so many animes out there and I at one time tried to explore very specific kinds of animes (I call them Hobby animes.) and I liked what I got.

heck one anime just FLAT OUT destroyed the Mary Sue Syndrome and before I saw that anime I would have flat out stated that unless it was a comedy and played for laughs that NO character set up that way could have genuin flaws they would have to deal with... it would always be that the flaw is somehow an advantage.
-For context the anime is Yamino Pastichie (I cannot spell it anymore >_<) and the main character Ichigo has a special talent where she basically has the super sense of taste but has never cooked before. Not ONLY is her ability not overdone and treated realistically, it is only used a few times and is more of a metaphor for her potential as a pastry chef and love for food, but her lack of experience is a flaw that actually is a real thing for the entire anime. A normal anime would have somehow made her super taste solve everything and just ignore her lack of experience partway through instead of making it a consistant obsticle.

All in all just keep looking. What makes anime so diverse is honestly there are waaaay more animes being made all the time then Western cartoons. Obviously whatever comes through as popular enough to get attention may just be something that would get attention.

Heck my favorite anime has no violence and freekishly for having a bunny girl in clothes that look more like underwear has pretty much no fanservice (no really... she looks like that but she is played almost completely modest.). Though whether or not it has a weird plot is up to you. I think if you can stomach the first 35 episodes it get really good. Why did I start watching? because it was a musical anime and finding mermaid melody became tough (I am not sure if I still like mermaid melody... In my oppinion the show gets stupid second season)

This is why I don't watch anime anymore. Either it's full to the brim with sexual fanservice or some twisted fuck of a plot.

Except for the 100's of shows which have neither excessive fan service, nor crazy sick plots or violence. there are a LOT of shows which have neither sex nor gory violence, e.g:

Bakuman
Sakimachi no Apollon
Aria: The Animation
Haibane Renmei
Kino's Journey

etc. the mistake is to think anime is a "genre". Anime isn't a genre, it's a medium, encompassing all genres. It's like attacking photography or painting based on the works some people produce.

Okay, I admit that was quite an uninformed quip, but really, it's rather hard to find an anime that doesn't focus too much on fighting or harems complete with panty shots and unnecessary boob grabs these days. For every 1000 Japanese media full of those crap you have to trudge, you can find only about 50-100 genuinely good Japanese media without that much fanservice.

And most of the okay ones are from the 1980s to the early 2000s. I have yet to see any serious non-fanservy anime in this and last year's lineup.

Those are 3 I completed form the ~80 odd anime airing this year, none of which involved violence or sexual fan-service (i'll probably add more to this list)

Plus, I'm not a guy who keeps up with all the news stuff, so there are probably a lot more. there were enough in 2011 too which were neither violent and smutty.

I don't really agree with New Guy that 80% of animes are ecchi - or that it's really any worse than previous years. I can see about ~20 shows on this list that look ok in that regard, and this is just new stuff airing in the current Fall quarter (october >), and about 12 that could be more ecchi (just going off the poster art)

too bad I don't have time to check any of them out :/ i'm still catching up with stuff from years ago.

What have you actually seen then from the last 2 years line up? Maybe you're just extremely bad at picking the good ones.
