I just watched "Black Rock Shooter" and actually was quite disapointed by how it panned out.

Admittingly, I heard it was bad but I was so drawn in by the concept that I just had to watch it.

Unfortunately they cop out of the emotional subplot and the symbolism was weak when you really thought about it.

Started reading the manga version of Gate - Thus the JSDF Fought There. It basically begins when a portal to a parallel world, known as the "Gate", suddenly appeared in Ginza, Tokyo. Monsters and troops (Dragons, Orcs, etc) poured out of the portal, turning the shopping district into a bloody inferno.
The Japan Ground-Self Defence Force immediately took action and pushed the fantasy creatures back to the "Gate"...bullets, cannon fire & missiles made them pay dearly for the surprise invasion quite satisfyingly. Now it's this world's turn to go to the "Special Region" at the other side.

Also what gender are Ho and Sunken Fish? I could have sworn they were female but then they kept referring to them as Mr. and he. At first I just assumed it was a genderless pronoun they'd defaulted or missed, but Mr. was harder to rationalize and it kept happening.

I am starting to dislike it vastly when people harp on "..."

Look, an elipsiscan  represent one of a few things.
1) Absent speach where a response would have otherwise been the expected result
2) Holding back speach (It is why "..." is often vocalised when dubbed in Japanese)
3) A pause or stretch of silence.

It isn't some sort of odd obsession of japanese crazyness. It is simply a device that they use more often then we often do in writing.

Ohh well sorry for bugging you.

I honestly can't say I've ever heard someone complain over an ellipsis being used to emphasize that there are things not being said for one reason or another, especially in a visual medium where one can't simply describe the things that aren't externally obvious.

Abuse of it in plain writing is another issue altogether. On the subject of annoying things, reason for not watching dubs #36: VAs that feel the need to express every pause, exclamation, shocked "silence", etc. by way of various grunts and cooing, mostly "EEEH!?". That is only mildly annoying normally, but when the VA is a talentless hack or obviously doesn't care at all about the role. :|


Anyhow, on topic: Finally got around to watching Guin Saga. Some bits of rough animation, but nothing too terrible. Plot is nonstandard enough (or perhaps standard in unexpected ways) to keep me interested.

Yep the most annoying this ever got was in Star Ocean 2 where there is this scene where every other phrase was "..." except done very slowly. It was like if you could write dialog that is said akwardly.

I've checked the manga - great stuff, but only 2 volumes translated. Is there any translation of original novel available?

Is there a word for a battle that involves both combatants not moving and calling out attacks? (note: They can move if the attack involves moving)

Because it is a very common way for anime battles to go... especially bad ones (I've seen it done VERY well before... usually)
