I've been looking into the history of 1980s cartoons, which saw a number of Japanese animations studios shipping work to other countries for a number of international series. I remember cartoons like Inspector Gadget, and later discovered that they were among my first exposures to anime. I never knew that so many were originally French! In poking around, I discovered a few anime originally produced for France that I'd never heard of, but would totally like to check out:

Spoiler: Ulysse 31, or The Odyssey in Space: (click to show/hide)

A French-written anime from the 80s that basically retells the story of the Odyssey in a Space Opera setting. Ulysses angers the gods (of SPACE), who delete the coordinates of Earth from his ship's computer, and cast him adrift. He wanders around righting wrongs with his son, a psychic alien-girl, and a tiny annoying robot sidekick, all the while rocking the Jesus Hair and a laser sword/blaster/shield combo. The themesongs (groovy alternate intro, and main intro both) are pretty rocking. I don't speak French, but in my head I translate the badass-sounding main theme as "Holy crap, it's Odysseus. / Here in space, it's kinda vicious, / but he don't care, laser sword in his hand."

Another French-written anime, featuring an orphan boy raised in a Barcelona monastery. He meets with a charismatic and at least semi-trustworthy explorer from the New World who is searching for ancient Aztec gold, and who supposedly knows what happened to his father. They embark for the Spanish colonies, meet up with other kids, find some crazy-advanced Aztechnology, stop plots to take over the world, etc., as usual for the time period.

I heard it described as a sort of Mesoamerican "Avatar: The Last Airbender" meets "Tomb Raider". Definitely want to check this out, since it seems to be well-written too. Obligatory themesong link

Oh, speaking of which I just realised the last twist in 999 only works in Japanese.  As in, it makes no sense in the English version at all and they just try to skim over it.  Nevermind.  I guess there was no other way.

9 = Kyū = q.  So it would work fine with Zero saying it out loud.  Wheras in English "nine" and "q" sound pretty different.

I've just finished reading the last availiable issue of berserk. Pretty ridic epic stuff, but now I'm real sad that I can't read more till the next issue gets released ;~;

I've been reading it for hours on end, every day of the past week. Glorious artwork, starting as a very dramatic low/medium fantasy grimdark medieval setting then morphing into high fantasy epic grimdark (through an awesome canon event). My only real critic (more like nitpicking) is that griffith and caska lose alot of their charm after the eclipse, for obvious reasons, but the other characters that get introduced later sorta make up for it. Hopefuly they'll regain it in the future issues.

Another thing is that the latest chapters are alot more action-ey then dramatic, with guts gaining the armor and being a huge badass all around. The drama only kicks in when either caska, griffith or the new characters are on the spotlight.

I recommend anyone that can stomach it to read it, awesome stuff all around.

Okay, caught a few episodes of Ulysse 31, both the original and the dub. The English dub was bad... really bad. Note that I have a really high tolerance for bad dubs; there's a point that dubs are so bad that they're good (see Speed Racer or Godzilla), but this went beyond that into the nigh-unbearable. This is a real shame, since there are absolutely NO subtitles available anywhere. Not even fan-made tracks, or the original French text to help me through it. The show should be a fun little romp through The Odyssey, redone as a vintage Sci-Fi adventure... but I don't think I could sit through the English dub and stay sane. The characters don't even sound human; they overact and babble, and have all the vocal inflection of Crab People. Even the word choice and writing in the dub is borked!

French Theme:

Not only is the structure and internal rhyme fun and brilliant (t'arrêter/tu erres/la Terre), the words emphasize his drive to do right, his indomitability, and of course frames his journey home. Also, if I'm getting the first bit right, it's worded to mean both "He's a force for good against the forces of evil" and "He has both a good and evil face". Also, "Not even Gods can stop you" is a pretty badass sentiment, and really hits the feel of Greek mythology! Now, instead of this in English, we get...


Dubbed English Theme:
Ulysses, Ulysses,
Soaring through all the galaxies
In search of Earth, flying into the night

(Ulysses) No one else can do the things you do!

It makes his homeward-bound quest a footnote, and makes him out to be some awesome flying loner, quick to wrath and violence, who brings the American Way to everyone. That's terrible themeing, and doesn't describe the character at all. On top of this, the band sounds like they were trying to be Queen, but failing. Hard.

I might have to stick to the original French version, and just use it as a tool to help me learn the language. As good a time as any to break out Rosetta Stone again, I suppose.
