INUYASHA!

it's about a schoolgirl that finds a portal back to ancient china in the well at her home, and has to find some scattered parts of weird crystals that got scattered all over the earth when she accidentally shot a demon crow that was carrying it. she does this with the help of a slightly evil demon with dog ears who had a magic necklace thrown over him by a priestess so that he falls on his face whenever some-one says "sit". it makes sense in context.

I liked Ranma 1/2 better.

I liked Ranma 1/2 better.

I liked both for about the first 30 or so episodes and then rapidly grew bored of them.

Nothing happened. Like, at all, ever. One of the main reasons i like Anime is that unlike most western serials, plots are actually resolved.

Well she doesn't resolve Ranma 1/2. Sorta ends it on a middle finger to the audience. She does or is concluding Inuyasha. Its 4am for me, so I cant remember if its concluded or still going. I am pretty sure that its going somewhere or has gotten there.

Part of the reason why I dont like Inyasha, is that its lost in itself and also take itself to seriously at time.  If it picked a theme, and stuck with it, I would be happy.

Combat wise, it has some pretty neat things but they get recycled like none other. Inyasha the anime reuses a lot combat footage, more so then the average. Its noticeable.

Its a pretty neat story. I think there are better magical girl anime, and better demon love story things. I also don't think Inuyasha is a must see anime. If you aren't really interested in Rumiko Takahashi, and her other award winning works, then Inuyasha is a good example of she does.

YES! The one reason I fell in love with anime is because they had consistent story.

Inuyasha mastered the ART of never advancing the story to the point where it might as well have been a Bugs Bunny Cartoon.

Dwarf has enjoyed hentai lately

That's all what I can say 'bout anime.
All that ever runs on TV here is childish stuff.
Also, I never can jump onto a series which I haven't seen from the very first episode on.

You have discovered my one weakness, Vector. The Megaman 2 soundtrack.

I must look into this "JAM Project".

Hurray!  Yeah, they're one of the few bands I actually listen to.  I haven't found a single lemon in all my wandering through their music, and they've been together for nearly 10 years now :3

The best part is that they're basically the people who managed to stay in the Japanese music industry despite not being very good-looking (they've hit and kept running through middle age), which is basically impossible in a world full of Visual-Kei bands, "idol frenzy," and Gackt.

Hrm.  No.  Any show that has sound effects in the opener gets massive minus points for quality.  I liked Ranma because it didn't purport to be anything more than slapstick (I have a lot of the manga, which is significantly better than the anime).  Anything that takes itself that seriously and ends up that long and drawn out without any resolution whatsoever is something I can't watch.

There's a reason why I usually don't watch anything longer than 13 episodes, with 26 tops :I  I may be a hardcore shonen manga fan, but I can't stand shonen anime.

Maison Ikkoku is good, though.

As for some anime that isn't porn but also isn't childish, I'll have to suggest Kino's Journey, Last Exile, Wolf's Rain, and Haibane Renmei.  No time now because I'm about to go midterm myself (twice ;D), but I'll give some synopses later.

That sounds a lot like the plot of Fushigi Yuugi, which I didn't particularly care for. I think I'll pass on that one for now.

Anyway, since a lot of people seem to be looking for recommendations, I'll go ahead and list a few of my favorites. (spoilered for brevity)
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

It seems like a lot of people here liked Last Exile. It's one of my favorites, but I didn't realize it was that well known.
One series I'm surprised I haven't seen mentioned much is Black Lagoon. I enjoyed it a lot. It's fairly violent, so I figured more people here would have seen it.

Actually, it didn't make sense in context either. Other than that, everything Vector said.

I used to watch that show with my sister back when it was on YTV like a million years ago

Yup, feudal Japan.  Sort of.  A bit before the resolution of the Warring States Era, I think, since Oda Nobunaga is still pretty young (20-ish?) in it.

and there were demons.

i don't think real-life feudal japan had a lot of those wandering around.

I'm not sure if the show ever elaborates on why there are tons of demons in feudal Japan, but they're literally nonexistent in modern Japan.

Sure it did. It also had Giant Enemy Crabs, the Japanese Samurai had to flip them on their back and attack their weak point For Massive Damage.
