The humans came back, unheralded by any goblin attackers.  They brought two wagon-loads worth of wood, and three wagon-loads worth of iron armor (too big for us to wear, and we're swimming in iron anyway), some unnecessary trinkets and a few anvils (!?).  We bought the entire lot of wood off of them in exchange for a single goblin sock, and when I meet with that trade liaison I'm going to impress upon him the total lack of need we have for anvils, and a preference for the wood that is essentially all we need from the humans.  Each log we buy is one less that needs to cut from this valley, and one less job for me to do.

Talk about excitement!  Kib had taken her bevy of children out beyond the gates, searching for god-knows-what, when Datan suddenly screamed.  A child thief had appeared right next to him!  Being one of the younger children, he'd lagged behind when Kib headed home and so was out in the open all alone.  It is fortunate that he is a steady sort of child, and he didn't lose his head this time.  The scream shocked the goblin into stillness just long enough for Datan to get a good head-start, running as fast as his little legs could carry him for the safety of the fort.  The goblin of course gave chase, nasty creature, and intent on his prey, he didn't notice that he had gotten within range of Arnmod's crossbow.  I am quite satisfied that that is one goblin which won't be thieving again.  But I have to ask myself just what was Kib thinking when she brought her children outside unnecessarily?

Although often those child thieves seem to be escorted by, or perhaps leading, the goblin ambushers, we haven't had an attack since the death of the single thief two months ago, perhaps they are still waiting for it to report back?  At any rate, the dwarven caravan came back today, bringing some steel armor (yes!) and other weapons.  Although the armor isn't as good quality as Litast can make, I still traded for it, as it may be good for training purposes, and it did make a good excuse to pile as much goblin junk as possible into their wagons.

Geez, you'd think lowering the gates rang every goblin alarm in the vicinity!  Another goblin party ambushed Litast today, as he was out getting some metal junk to melt down and fashion into more useful things.  He lost all good sense he was given, and ran around all over the nearby area for nearly two hours before he finally seemed to remember that safety was to be found inside, not running, and he made a beeline straight for the entrance and into Arnmod's range.  When the first bolt shot past his head, he seemed to go berserk, and turned to attack the seven goblins chasing him!  Though he gave a good accounting of himself, and Arnmod's covering fire helped, Litast is now thrashing in bed with a broken arm and leg.  I suppose it will be awhile before we get our smith back.  The merchants and their mercenaries all stayed in the depot, happy to let us take care of the problem.  You'd think they would help out their fellow dwarves, right?  Humph.

Litast has been screaming for water the last few days, as our injured seem prone to doing, but no one has been taking on the job.  Honestly, if you want something done, you've got to do it yourself, and as I have no intention of losing our only smith, I had to grab a bucket and take the trip to the well and back to water him.  Hopefully someone else can take over and feed him, I have other things to do.

12th Granite, 213
After a very quiet winter, spring has come again, heralded by the arrival of the elves.  But, if these events are to be taken as a portent of the future, it is liable to get very violent, very soon.
No sooner had the blasted elven caravan arrived, than they were ambushed by goblins (of course).  Sighing, I ordered Ablel and Vucar to back up Arnmod, as I went to the top of the walls to watch the elven departure, cowards that they are.  The goblins killed off two of the elves and half of the pack animals within the first few minutes, causing two of the elves and a mule to be stricken by melancholy.  Understandable, I suppose, considering their attachment to all living things, although I still can't believe that they hold goblins in the same high regard.
Seeing the death of his comrades, one of the elves went berserk and attacked a fellow elf, killing it and then att---wait, WHAT!?  I still can't believe it, although as Arnmod, Vucar and Ablel all saw the same thing, and I do not think we were all hallucinating, it must have happened.  The elf did indeed attack his comrade, and several goblins, and a mule!  So much for their professed veneration for nature!  And then, as if that was not enough, the second surviving elf tore into the remaining goblins in a berserk rage!  He also annihilated a hapless kobold thief that had the misfortune to wander across his path.

After the elves had taken care of the goblins, I sent Arnmod out to finish them off, the last thing we need is a pair of killer elves sitting on our doorstep.  We did get all of the elven goods free of charge, though I'm not sure what to do with most of the trinkets, or the tame vermin, but the doe will make good eating.
Incidentally, Arnmod has now become our first champion after killing off the two rampaging elves.

OOC:I took screenshots during the battle, so here they are.

The X in the right-hand panel is the berserk elf, the X is the melancholic elf.  Both panels are at the same time point, I was trying to get one to show the actual flashing !, but it didn't work.

The elf attacking the goblin.

Just before the elves go on their murderous rampage.

The ensuing carnage.

Did Arnmod gain any more titles?

Not that he would let that go to his head, of course.

No he hasn't.  Can dwarves gain more titles once they have one set?

"Durien, Durien!"   Ablel ran out of the nearly completely dug arena to find Durien just stepping out of the "junk" stockpile.
"Wha' useless stone have yer foun' now?"  Durien glanced up at her.
"I foun' cinnabar!"
"Uh huh.  An' wha's it used fer?"
"It's mercury ore!"
"An' can we make an'thin' out o' it?"
"Um, well..."  Ablel hemmed and hawed but finally had to admit, "nothin' fancy.  Th' color's pretty though!"
"Anothe' useless rock, I tol' yer ter on'y let me know when yer struck real ore!  Now get back ter work b'fore I break somethin'!"

Litast is up and around again, but he continues to complain of nagging headaches.  I suppose when he was wounded, he must have hit his head against something.  It doesn't seem to have slowed his real work down much, but he really does have to be more careful about going out when there might be goblins about.

The humans have returned, as they always do at this time of year.  And they have brought tidings that bother me greatly.  It seems that we ended up in between two elven civilizations.  Those from Rofa Uni, with whom we have had some contact, live in a great forest to the southwest, but we knew that.  However, there is a second elven retreat, Nuramivafice, to the southeast of us of which we have known nothing until now.  According to the humans, who heard it from a small group of refugee elves, that settlement has been burned to the ground by a great army of goblins.  There is no doubt in my mind that Tuxumstozu has done this, considering the direction from which they will come and the location of the elven retreat.  Their army draws closer and we are far from ready to withstand a concerted attack.

A raiding party arrived at our closed gates this evening, and screamed in fury when we refused to open them.  Far into the night we could see the light of their bonfire and here the cries of our two loyal dogs who had been chained outside.  Those uncivilized brutes!

The merchants have announced their readiness to depart, so I ordered Arnmod, Libash and Ablel to accompany me outside and clear away the encamped raiders.  No sooner had the gate opened, than two more squads revealed their presence, two squads accompanied by several crossbow- and bow-goblins!
Arnmod opened fire immediately, and managed to slay one of the bowgoblins before the rest of us closed to take one the others.  Just then the cat came charging out of the fort, and the goblins began to target it instead of us.  Stupid creatures, but I shouldn't complain, since their stupidity was what saved us.  Arnmod ran out of bolts shortly after slaying his second goblin, and waded into the fight wielding his crossbow as a hammer, instead of the hammer tucked into his belt.  I suppose we'll all just have to get used to his odd preference.
On my way back to inform the merchants that the road was clear for their departure, I came across a child thief.  With one swing of my axe, I sent the beast flying thirty-one dwarf-lengths!  I didn't know I had gotten that strong with all the pencil-pushing I've been doing lately!
With the goblins destroyed, the merchants were able to leave in safety.  But, we didn't all have it our own way.  Libash has a broken arm and a punctured right lung.  We've carried him to bed, and I hope he'll be alright.

The dwarven caravan returned, and as if they knew what we needed, there was a single caged cat among their cargo, which I promptly bought.  I feel as if a fort is incomplete if there is no cat wandering its halls.  That, and there was beginning to be a rat problem in our food stockpiles since the demise of our previous cat.  The new cat was also an excellent excuse for getting rid of as much goblin junk as the traders could carry, as we always do.  At least we don't have to make any trade goods, freeing up time for other tasks.

Whew!  The last mountain goat has finally been caged and we already seem to be working faster, now that we aren't tripping over them at least twenty times a day.  I took advantage of the caging process to get a full count, and I've realized that we have 101 mountain goats!  One.  Hundred.  One.  The new priority is getting the slaughter sacrifice-determinating system up and running in the temple.  And we need a full-time butcher.  Hmm.  Libash normally carries out that task but with him on bed rest...  Well, it's not like we're going to need a butcher tomorrow.
