Dwarf fort: Human castle edition.
« on: September 22, 2008, 04:24:05 pm »

Hi guys, this is my first post here on the Dwarf Fort Forums.  I started playing this game a few weeks ago and I really think it's amazing.  Before my "human castle" becomes unplayable due to a new game version, I would like to share it with you.

First floor:

Second floor (Ramparts, Crenellations[fortifications]) and some second stories:

Basement/moat level (note that nothing other than mining goes on past this level - you can see the central mining shaft in the middle):

Marksdwarves fire a volley from the ramparts, behind crenellations...

...to devastating effect on a squad of goblin siegers.

Here's the state of the union as of my last save:

To build all of the wooden buildings inside, I had to clearcut the entire embarkment area multiple times AND import huge amounts of wood.  The elves don't pester me about trees because there aren't any to cut down anymore.

Oh, and everything was made out of either wood blocks (not logs) or chalk blocks (also not raw stone).  That took a long time.

As far as defenses go, it's pretty much impregnable.  The water moat was not necessary for defense, but a "human castle" would not have been complete without one, right?

I was thinking about putting siege engines on the towers, but I heard somewhere that they don't fire through the Z axis like archers do.

Let's see.... other details?  I've got food and drink up to my eyeballs; I actually leave the fields fallow 1/2 of the year so I don't have to build a bunch more barrels and designate more food stockpiles.

You might notice a little room with a lever next to it in the southern part of the castle.  The room is lined with "menacing wooden spikes."  I throw animals in there to help reduce the lag by "disposing" of them.  Too bad you can't butcher animals that are killed in traps, right?  Is there any way to do a mass killing of animals and still be able to butcher them?

Also, the military comprises almost entirely of marksdwarves, though I would like to draft a small force of well-trained and well-armed soldiers relegated to meleé.

I might put up a 3d visualization if my homework doesn't take too long this evening.

also note that the empty courtyard to the south was for future expansion of housing the nobility, but alas, none but the philosopher have come yet.

Sweet, I'd move in without hesitation   :)

But you do know that there's a map archive for DF right?  Check out http://mkv25.net/dfma/index.php
Some pretty awesome constructions to be found there

Very cool, but... Why do people make things out of blocks? Is there some advantage to it that I don't know? Raw stone/logs look just the same as blocks. Are they more valuable? Is it just for the challenge, or the cool factor?

Also, is there a third level? I see some buildings on the second level that have some up/down stairs... What's the building just south of the trade depot and entrance? It has a drawbridge access and some furniture. A mayor/noble's room?

Also also, there probably won't be a save-breaking version for a few months. I doubt you'd have to worry about that.

Yeah, blocks and constructions made with them are more valuable.

They're worth more, twice as much as raw rock I think

EDIT2:  What's a footkerchief anyway?

Not to steal the OP's thunder, but my favorite map from the map archive is mountainbanners. It's difficult to describe it without looking at it. You can find it here: http://mkv25.net/dfma/map-2449-mountainbanners

I used to build with blocks because it was an excuse for my mason to reach legendary without spamming lots of furniture...
I don't really care that much about the value of the walls.

It is absolutely awesome! *downloading a savefile to watch it 3dDwarf* :o

Btw. I am also building an above-ground human castle (or rather a town because it doesn't have any walls yet). ;)

Ground level:

Ground level +1:

Ground level +2:

The tallest building (the food stockpile) has 5 floors but they all look the same, so i won't post the rest.
Almost everything is above ground - underground are only tombs and a prison and a mining areas of course.
I will post it in DF Map Archive when finished.

Edit: I forgot to mention i have smoothed every single boulder on the whole 5x5 map and and engraved most of them. ;D

What's that room with all the tables in it? Furniture stockpile?

Yes, it is furniture stockpile. It is filled with tables and chairs because i am currently rebuilding the dining rooms so i removed the furniture from them. You can see an unfinished dining room in level ground+2 above the food stockpile. The dining rooms in levels 0 and 1 will also be rebuilt, they will be 1 tile wider in each side to become a square and will be made out of blocks, instead of logs they are made of now. I will add some gold statues too.

Blocks are more valuable, and they are (in my opinion) easier to construct things with, as you can stack them in bins and move them around to stockpiles.  A single hauler can move ~10 blocks at once, or one log or stone at once.  PLUS, in the case of mega-constructions, you'll end up with quite a few legendary craftsmen which can be used to make statues, etc.  OR you can cross-train them quickly in another profession (because of high agility, strength, and endurance).

Yeah, there is a third level, but only 2-3 buildings go that high, and I didn't bother to post it.  It's only the bedroom for the two nobles, and one extra living space for peasants.

That building is a noble's house for the captain of the guard.  There happened to be a murky pool there so I just built a bridge over it.  I thought that would be neat to look at anyway.

Oh and thanks for the map archive.  No, I didn't know it existed.  That map of Mountainbanners is Epic.

Spoggerific:  Awesome.  I have found that hallenges and unique setups are a great way to add playability to this game.  Looks like you need more bins, though... hehe.

I didn't add a lot of embellishments because I kind of thought that making a pimped out King's Keep would be fun, but alas, no King, and though I am vaguely aware of how to get more nobles to come, I'm not really sure on how the best way to do it is.  Uh, let's see.  I also really wanted to focus on the military, but the sieges thus far have been really anti-climactic.

Oops. I forgot to mention, mountainbanners isn't mine. I believe it has a link to the thread where people talked about making it. I don't know, off-hand, anyway, who made it.

EDIT: Typo.

Dear lord that is insane.  A suspension bridge with a shag carpet.

Also, I really liked his ballista-under-the-drawbridge defense strategy, it's very space-efficient.  Although it doesn't make much sense that ballistas can fire through ramps.
