I felt I was just repeating the same mission over and over so as not to lose points for ignoring it.

Basically almost all [if not all of them?] "mission based" games are like that.  ;)

Holy Generalization, Batman.  I assume you're not including games that are a sequence of pre-defined missions in that...

I think that would fall under "storyline-following" (or something to that effect) rather than "mission-based".

Hmmm. How would you define mission-based, and can you give some examples?  I'm not nitpicking, I'm just have trouble defining them for myself and am interested in your thoughts.

Well what I meant is this:
Take a game with "randomized missions/quests", for example X-Com or Mount and Blade.
Lets talk about Mount and Blade for now, since its quite popular and well known even nowadays.
So there are a couple of basic quests in the game.
Examples:
- Get some gold from an NPC and bring it back to another NPC
- Steal cows
- Kill a criminal
- and a couple of more quest types.

After a period you wont find any new quest types, thus slowly but surely all of them will be repetitive. The same was true about X-Com and any other games with this randomized quest/mission system. This is surely better than some linear games with static quests and missions, do not get me wrong.  :)

Non-Linear > Linear.
By far.

I don't think you can make a game without repetition (IE 'mission' types) in some form, so non-linear is as good as it gets.

Linear games get a lot of hate. Non-linear games suffer from a multitude of problems that are pretty annoying. Most have a little to far and give the player no sense of direction. Even if you have the most exciting cave in the world, if you don't give the player motivation or direction to VISIT it, then there's no point.

Like, digging out a fort, with no hope of ever "winning" anything.  Sure, design your fort how you want. Hell, make it in the sky.  But you know what? It wont help. You'll still fail to win.  Why? Because it's non-linear. There is no win.  Have fun. :P

Dwarf Fortress and X-COM are in the same league. They're two of the damn best games I've ever had the pleasure of playing.

Dwarf Fortress is mod-capable though...

Non-Linear > Linear.
By far.

I think there is room for both kinds of games. Obviously you will get more replay value out of a non linear game. However, a non-linear game would never be able to match a good linear game in terms of story.

I hope you don't mind if I disagree, a so called non-linear game can excel in personal stories.
