Google Chrome
« on: September 02, 2008, 04:35:24 pm »

So Google has rolled out their new browser, Google Chrome (windows only for now, but eventually will be ported to nux and mac).

So far I like it. I have already ported out all my Firefox bookmarks and I intend to use it until I find something that pushes me back to FF (thankfully I haven't a lot of FF pluggins so there isn't much lost) and the ads haven't scared me yet (no add-blocking features yet).

Anyone else has tried it?

Whats the problem with IE? I am only using IE, and I never ever had any problem with it so far.

You really don't want to get the firefox fanboys started. (admittedly, I am one...)

Anyway, Chrome seems pretty good.  I especially like the tab management features, and the Gears integration.  Ads are a biggie for me though, and I think I'll wait to completely move over until they've got some support for an adblocker of some kind.

Well, I got nothing against IE. Although I prefer FF for it's plugins and extra security they provide (end of micro-rant).

You lose nothing for trying Chrome though.

Adblock, it's faster, and better security. It's also incredibly customizable.

I have adblock for IE also, its fast and never had any problems with security either.
[However Ive installed FF once, because there was something what wasnt working with IE..some AoC talent calculator, however just after Ive installed FF, it became "compatible" with IE also..my luck!  ;D]

Firefox was more revolutionary when it started. After it caught on, IE essentially mimicked all of the major features of Firefox and other browsers (Opera comes to mind).

I believe by customizable, penguin means that it has a LOT of different skins (or themes) available for download, and a ton of plug-ins that do various things.

In terms of security, it has NoScript, that blocks scripts/flash from any site not marked as trusted. By having to allow sites on a case-by-case basis (with merely two clicks on the tiny toolbar) you prevent a lot of possible attacks. It also warns you of other exploits.

Other things, like WeatherFox, are obvious. I'm also trying something called Ubiquity, which is something of a thinking prompt. It allows you to control Firefox with command words, and do a lot of handy things quickly.

If you're happy with IE, then there's really no need to change unless you're curious or bored. I'm going to try Chrome though, I like the idea of a minimalist browser. I hope it starts up faster than IE/FF and uses less memory, too.

This is only an issue with old computers actually. Everything is hellish fast on a medium config even.

At least it's way faster and uses less memory than FF. Gmail loads like if it where hardcoded into the browser.

Chrome actually includes the Incognito mode which basically avoids storing anything on your computer. So at least your computer will be free from any evidence of your browsing habits.

Haha on the incognito opening page:

Going incognito doesn't affect the behavior of other people, servers, or software. Be wary of:
...
People standing behind you

Also its not bad, though it lacks the use of the middle mouse button for scrolling. :(

The middle mouse button scrolling works fine for me. The browser does seem pretty fast although I miss firefox plugins and layout. If I'm not mistaken a big advantage FF had over IE was that it was open source. That allows all the great brains out there in the world to create fixes and improvements as opposed to only the brains at microsoft.

Yeah, FF's open source nature is its greatest asset, I think.

I've been using Chrome for a while now. I like its humor, such as the "stats for nerds" link and such. Always appreciated. I like the layout, as it's much less cluttered than Firefox + A few add-ons, or raw IE. I'm eager to see where it goes.
